VCU too much for Mountain Hawks

Bethlehem, PA – After a long break for finals, Lehigh returned to action on Thursday evening falling to Virginia Commonwealth 93-63 at Stabler Arena. The loss dropped the Mountain Hawks to 4-5 on the season while the Rams improved to 3-6 overall. Virginia Commonwealth jumped out to an early 18-7 lead behind four three pointers in the first four minutes, and never looked back. The Rams were hot on offense and defense. They shot a gaudy 59% from the field and a blistering 73% from behind the arc. VCU shot 92% from the charity stripe, forced 22 Lehigh turnovers and recorded 16 steals. "We ran into a tough team tonight," said Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan. "We knew coming in that this was going to be a tough game and a challenging portion of our schedule. Our defense didn’t play very well and they were the better team tonight." Anne Tierney led the Mountain Hawks with 22 points shooting 9-of-13 from the field. Tierney was 2-of-3 from behind the arc and had three rebounds and three assists. Carli Toliver and Cat Nicholson each added 11 points and three rebounds to the effort. Kristine Austgulen led the Rams with 22 points shooting 10-of-16 from the field. Austgulen pulled down six rebounds and dished out two assists in the win. Rochelle Luckett notched a double double scoring ten points and dishing out 10 assists on the evening. Luckett was equally as good on the defensive end recording seven steals. ShaVohn McKinnon scored 16 points and Meagan Evans added 14 points in the win. Lehigh returns to action on December 27th when it travels to Miami, Florida for the Gatorade Holiday Classic, hosted by the University of Miami. The Mountain Hawks will open the tournament against the Hurricanes with tipoff scheduled for 7:00.
