Junior Jon Trenge and freshman Troy Letters advanced to the finals of the 2003 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Kansas City on Friday night while freshmen Derek Zinck joined Trenge, Letters and junior Brad Dillon as All Americans. The individual results capped off a wonderfully successful first two days of "Nationals" for Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks find themselves solidly in third place with one day remaining.
"I told our guys after we won Easterns that I thought we peaked, but I also told them before we came out here to Nationals that we could still get better and I think we did," head coach Greg Strobel said. "Everyone of our kids has wrestled extremely well. Even in the matches that we’ve lost we’ve been very close. It’s just been a great tournament so far for Lehigh."
Trenge, top-seeded at 197 advanced to his second consecutive final with a victory over fourth seeded Chris Skretkowicz of Hofstra and will meet sixth seeded Damion Hahn of Minnesota in the finals.
Letters, seeded second at 165 lbs. will meet top-seeded Matt Lackey of Illinois in the finals. With a late takedown Letters rallied to beat third seeded Tyrone Lewis of Oklahoma State.
Dillon suffered a heartbreaking sudden-death loss to third seeded Robbie Waller of Oklahoma. Seeded seventh, Dillon appeared to have escaped in the sudden death period for the win with :18 seconds remaining. After a brief celebration the officials ruled that the whistle had blown calling for a stalemate. Dillon could not escape in the remaining time. Lehigh protested the result, but the review was denied.
Zinck became Lehigh’s fourth All-American with a consolation round win early Friday night.
As a team Lehigh stands in third place with 68 points trailing only first place Oklahoma State (102 points) and Minnesota (87 points). Lehigh’s 68 points are 2 ½ points ahead of fourth place Oklahoma (65 ½ points) and fifth place Arizona State (51 points).
The NCAA Finals can be seen on ESPN2 Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. and heard live on the Lehigh website.
