Lehigh salvages tie with Kangaroos

10/9/2003 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh (7-1-3) fell behind twice but was able to come back both times and salvage a 2-2 tie on Tuesday against UMKC at the Ulrich Sports Complex. It was a cold and brisk night and Lehigh looked sluggish on defense, allowing the Kangaroos to score almost as many goals as the Mountain Hawks had given up all season. The tie moves Lehigh to 7-1-2 on the season and UMKC goes to 3-5-2.
The Kangaroos (3-5-2) struck early at the 5:36 mark when Ryan Kaufman netted a goal off of a feed from Dan Hilson. Lehigh then seemed to turn it up a notch offensively launching a series of shots and finally found the back of the net when senior Steve Fisher scored his sixth goal of the season at the 23:45 mark off of a feed from freshman Maciek Serafin.
The game remained tied through the first half and into the second half, until UMKC struck again. The Kangaroos scored once again when Martin Blake found the back of the net off of a Ryan Kaufman feed and UMKC had the lead. Lehigh head coach Dean Koski then went with a new defensive scheme, going to a 3-5-2 defense to apply some offensive pressure, and the move worked, as Fisher netted his second goal of the game, this time off of an assist from Kyle Hansen.
Junior goalkeeper Sam Bishop recorded the most saves that he has in one game this season, as he stopped nine Kangaroo shots. UMKC goalie Todd Dohlman also sent back nine shots on the evening. UMKC out shot the Mountain Hawks 23-19 on the evening and had seven corners compared to Lehigh’s five.
Koski thought that his team could have played better overall, but was still pleased with the effort. "We went to that special defense at the end of regulation to apply some pressure offensively and it paid off as we got the goal. The young guys who came in, replacing senior captains Doug Cusick and Wes Roach, did a nice job and we were able to tie up the game." Koski adds, "We were very sloppy on defense, not that the effort wasn’t there, but we gave up two goals, which was our worst defensive performance of the season and were lucky to come away with a tie."
Lehigh returns to action on Friday when the Mountain Hawks host Patriot League foe Army at 7:00. The game will be broadcast live on Lehigh’s website.
