Lehigh and Army play to tie

10/12/2003 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer

Bethlehem, PA – For the second game in a row, Lehigh fell behind early and was able to come back and salvage a tie.  The Mountain Hawks and Army played to a 1-1 tie in double overtime in a Patriot League contest on Friday at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  The tie brings Lehigh to 7-1-4 on the season overall, 1-0-2 in the Patriot League, while the Black Knights go to 3-5-3 and 0-1-2 overall.  Lehigh is now unbeaten in its last six games.
Army got on the board first when Todd Severson scored off a header off of a David Yu assist at the 69:14 mark and it appeared as though the Black Knights had stolen a victory on South Mountain.  But Lehigh and its never say die attitude came right back and became very aggressive on the offensive end, launching an array of shots.  Sophomore Peter Classi then found the back of the net with just less than five minutes remaining and Lehigh forced the game into overtime.
The Mountain Hawks dominated the first overtime period, out shooting the Black Knights 4-0.  Army then came back and got off three of its own shots in the second overtime but neither team could find the back of the net.
Junior goalkeeper Sam Bishop recorded five saves on the evening for Lehigh and Army’s Matt Wesmiller registered ten.  The Mountain Hawks amassed 21 shots for the game, compared to 13 for the Black Knights.
Head Coach Dean Koski was pleased to come away with a tie, but would like to see his team play better from the outset.  “Army totally outplayed us in the first half, they put us on our heels.  The second half was much more evenly played, and it was good for us to again come back after being down.”  Koski adds, “I would have to say that this is not a good tie, but we were able to get the point in the standings and that’s important.  Army played a great game, I give them credit.”
Lehigh returns to action next Saturday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Lewisburg to take on Patriot League leading Bucknell.  Game time is set for 3:00.
