Lewisburg, PA - Lehigh has made it common practice to tie opponents this season and Saturday afternoon proved no different as the Mountain Hawks and Bucknell played to a 2-2 tie in a match up of Patriot League front runners. With the tie, Lehigh has now gone eight games without being beaten, with its record standing at 7-1-5 overall, 1-0-3 in the Patriot League, while Bucknell goes to 8-5-1 on the season, 3-0-1 in league action.
The Bison got on the board first when senior Chris Beekman netted a goal at the 26:57 mark off of an assist from fellow senior Brian King. Lehigh came roaring back as senior Steve Fisher netted his eighth goal of the season off an assist from junior Brandon Smith at the 39:47 mark and the game was tied at one.
The score would stay knotted at one until halftime and through the beginning of the second half until sophomore James Lawler netted his first career goal at the 48:36 clip and Lehigh was in control with the 2-1 lead. Senior co-captain Doug Cusick and sophomore Kyle Hansen assisted on Lawler’s tally. Lehigh’s defense turned it up after the team grabbed the lead, however, the Bison would not quit and with just under 20 minutes remaining, sophomore Tim Faneck scored to tie the game up at two.
The two teams then battled for the remainer of regulation and both overtime periods, but neither defense would budge, resulting in the 2-2 tie. Junior goalkeeper Sam Bishop picked up seven saves on the afternoon and Bucknell sophomore goalie Adam Edwards registered four saves of his own. The Mountain Hawks out shot the Bison 11-7 on the day, but only two of those shots found the net. Lehigh now comes up on the stretch run of its season with three league games remaining, as teams jockey for position in the leage’s post season tournament.
