Darryl A. Burley
- Induction:
- 1995
- Class:
- 1983
The Lehigh wrestling program has distinguished itself as a “producer” of national and EIWA champions. Few, if any, are a better example of this than Darryl Burley.
He captured not only one, but two individual national championship crowns for the Engineer program. Burley is also just one of only four Lehigh wrestlers in school history to take home four EIWA titles.
In 1979, he took home a national title while wrestling at 134 pounds and then again in 1983 where he was victorious at 142 pounds. Even in 1980 and 1981 when he didn't win a championship, Burley finished second, both times at 134 pounds.
A two-time Midlands Tournament titleist, Burley was voted the Amateur Wrestler of the Year in 1983. Two years later in 1985, he was crowned National Freestyle Champion. Burley won a silver medal in the 1985 Tblisi Tournament in Russia and was an alternate for the United States in the 1984 Olympic Games.
Burley recorded 94 total wins in is Lehigh career, which ranked third on the program’s list at the time of his graduation. He also recorded 49 dual meet victories, the sixth-most in program history at the time of his graduation. He held a career winning percentage of 93.40%, which ranked third all-time at his graduation and still ranked ninth through the 2017 season.
