Rob Shutte is in his first season as Lehigh’s head women’s golf coach. Shutte arrived at Lehigh with a wealth of professional teaching and coaching experience, including head men’s golf coach at nearby Muhlenberg College from 2005 through 2009. “This is a very exciting opportunity for me and one that I am looking forward to,” Shutte explained. “Looking at the facilities at Lehigh, including the home course for the U.S. Women’s Open at Saucon Valley Country Club as well as the best practice course in the Lehigh Valley at the Mulvihill Golf Learning Center, this is an attractive place for me to continue the success the program has had. Between the facilities, an outstanding academic institution and a supportive athletics department, the Lehigh women’s golf program has the ability to attract student-athletes from not only here in the United States, but also internationally.”
Shutte continued, “Throughout the interview process I was impressed with the athletics department itself. I like the strategy that (Dean of Athletics) Joe Sterrett has created. I knew several folks in the department just from being in the Lehigh Valley and after talking with others during the interviews it was evident that the mission and values of the institution and athletics department are right up my alley. This is a great fit for me.”
He concluded, “Being in the Lehigh Valley what better place to coach than Lehigh? It is the marquee university and athletics department in the area. We want the kids currently on the team and the kids we will recruit to Lehigh to be set up for success on and off the golf course. And between a supportive athletics department as well as tremendous facilities I believe things are in place to achieve those goals.”
Prior to serving as head coach at Muhlenberg Shutte held a number of positions within the golf world, including Teaching Professional at John Jacobs Golf School in Phoenix, Assistant Golf Professional at Arcola Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey, Program Administrator and Teaching Golf Professional at The First Tee of Metropolitan New York in the Bronx, Assistant Golf Professional at Cherry Valley County Club in Skillman, New Jersey and Assistant Golf Professional at Center Valley Golf Club in Center Valley, Pennsylvania.
Shutte is a Class A member of the Professional Golfers’ Association of America (PGA) and has coached basketball on a number of levels throughout the years, including at local Notre Dame High School.
In addition to his work on the golf course, Shutte currently serves as Vice President of Independent Financial Advisors in Easton, Pennsylvania, hosting a weekly financial advice/golf talk show on Nassau Broadcasting’s ESPN Radio of the Lehigh Valley. ESPN Radio 1230-1320 is the radio home of Lehigh Athletics.
Shutte graduated from Penn State University in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in Recreation and Parks Management. He also went through a continuing education program at Fairleigh Dickinson in financial planning that spanned one year.
