Quinn McDowell enters his third season as Lehigh assistant coach in 2021-22. He came to Lehigh after stints with Virginia Wesleyan and Taylor University.
Â
In McDowell’s first season, the Mountain Hawks fought through some early struggles, but never quit and finished the season 6-3 over their final nine games. It included wins over three of the four eventual Patriot League semifinal teams, and a home Patriot League Tournament victory over Loyola. It was the 10th time in 11 seasons Lehigh hosted at least one PLT contest. The Mountain Hawks won their final three regular-season contests, which included topping Bucknell in a wire-to-wire Senior Day win (69-60). Three days later, Lehigh picked up a hard-fought 57-55 overtime win over Boston University, handing the eventual league champion Terriers what proved to be their final loss of the season.
In the shortened and atypical 2020-21 season (due to the COVID pandemic), Marques Wilson was named third team All-Patriot League and NABC second team All-District, becoming Lehigh's first NABC All-District honoree since Tim Kempton in 2016-17, and just the Mountain Hawks' sixth different NABC All-District honoree in program history. Also during that season, the Mountain Hawks opened the season with a thrilling overtime win over archrival Lafayette, which included a long Wilson 3-pointer at the buzzer that led SportsCenter as Scott Van Pelt's best thing he saw today. Lehigh picked up an exciting road win at Loyola in February, against a team that went on to advance to the Patriot League Championship Game.
A strong student-athlete himself, McDowell was a four-year starter and two-time All-Conference selection at William & Mary, graduating in 2012. He became the first player in CAA history to be named the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award winner twice (the award goes to the student-athlete who "embodies the highest standards of leadership, integrity and sportsmanship in conjunction with his academic athletic achievement."). McDowell was a three-time CAA All-Academic Team honoree and was named one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award, the first finalist in CAA men’s basketball history to be named a finalist. He was Team MVP as a senior, becoming one of only four players in W&M history with 1,600 career points and 500 career rebounds. McDowell set the William & Mary school record for games played and minutes played in a career.
Â
McDowell went on to play post-graduation in top basketball leagues, including the G-League, the VTB League in Russia, LEB Gold in Span and SBL in Australia.
Â
McDowell began his coaching career as assistant at Division III Virginia Wesleyan University. Along with day-to-day scouting, recruitment and player development, McDowell helped monitor the academic progress of the student-athletes, which led to an all-time high grade point average and 100 percent graduation rate. McDowell also amplified the program’s social media presence, increased camp enrollment and came up with strategic initiatives for the head coach to help raise funds for the program.
Â
McDowell comes to Lehigh after one season at NAIA Taylor University in Indiana. While there, the former William & Mary standout handled scouting, game planning and played a critical role in player development and recruiting. McDowell also served as the strength and conditioning coach, working closely with the athletic trainers and head coach to design and implement strength and conditioning programs.
