Matt Borich joins the Lehigh football coaching staff for the 2019 season. Borich is no stranger to Patriot League football, as a standout defensive lineman and linebacker at Bucknell, and for the last 10 seasons an assistant coach at his alma mater.
Borich coached the defensive line at Bucknell and served as defensive run game coordinator for one season before being elevated to defensive coordinator for the 2013 season. He spent six seasons as Bucknell’s defensive coordinator and served as Bucknell’s assistant head coach over the last five seasons.
At Bucknell, Borich oversaw a defense that consistently ranked among the Patriot League’s best. The Bison ranked in the top 20 in the FCS in total defense in four of the last nine seasons, ranking 10th in 2014 and 11th in 2017. Borich’s Bucknell defenses were especially tough against the run, ranking in the top 11 nationally in four of the last nine years, highlighted by a pair of top five finishes. The Bison boasted the fourth-best passing defense in the FCS in 2017 and led the Patriot League in total defense in six of his 10 seasons in Lewisburg.
A Bucknell defensive player won Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year honors in three of the last five seasons, including defensive tackle Abdullah Anderson in 2017. Anderson went on to sign a free agent contract with the Chicago Bears.
Dating back to the 2010 season, Borich mentored at least one first team All-Patriot League defensive lineman. His defensive linemen garnered a combined 17 All-Patriot League citations, including 12 first team honors.
Prior to joining the coaching staff at his alma mater, Borich spent six seasons as Princeton’s defensive line coach. Borich broke into the coaching profession with a two-year stint at Dickinson College and also spent a year coaching at Lafayette before moving on to Princeton.
As a student-athlete at Bucknell, Borich was a three-year letter winner and was a member of the Bucknell class with the most wins in school history (29). He totaled 62 tackles in 32 career games and received Bucknell’s Coaches Award for Leadership.
A native of Winfield, Pa., and Selinsgrove Area High School, Borich graduated from Bucknell in 2001 with a degree in economics.
Borich and his wife Kelly will relocate to the Lehigh Valley.
