SPORTS MEDICINE SERVICES
Appointments
- Appointments for evaluation or rehabilitation that require direct interaction with Sports Medicine personnel will be scheduled online in advance via the SportsWare student-athlete portal.
- Student-athletes will be required to complete the self check-in process upon arrival to the Sports Medicine facility.
- Advanced communication with the Sports Medicine team is required when a scheduled appointment needs to be cancelled.
Post-Operative Rehabilitation
- Appointments for post-operative rehabilitation will be scheduled in advance with the Sports Medicine team.
- Student-athletes will be required to complete the self check-in process upon arrival to the Sports Medicine facility.
- Student-athletes who have surgery with a Lehigh University team physician or consultant for a sport-related injury will be eligible for post-operative rehabilitation at Lehigh University Sports Medicine.
- Student-athletes who have surgery with an external physician for a sport-related injury will be referred for post-operative rehabilitation at our medical provider or an alternate physical therapy clinic. These student-athletes will be eligible for rehabilitation at Lehigh University Sports Medicine once specific criteria have been met (refer to Policy and Procedures for Release of Long Term Rehabilitation Cases).
Self Care Area
- Self-directed prevention and rehabilitation areas are available at the Cundey Varsity House during operational hours.
- Student-athletes should develop a plan with a member of the Sports Medicine team before beginning self-directed therapy.
- Advanced appointments are not required for self-directed therapy.
Pre-Practice/Event Preparation
- All facilities will open for pre-practice/event preparation based on the in-season (conference team championship segment) schedule.
- Initial injury evaluations, rehabilitation, and extended/post-operative rehabilitation will not be performed during pre-practice/event preparation unless:
- Student-athletes with scheduling conflicts communicate with Sports Medicine personnel to make alternate arrangements in advance.
- Student-athletes with scheduling conflicts were unable to communicate with Sports Medicine personnel in advance for legitimate reason.
- Injury is new and/or urgent in nature as determined by Sports Medicine personnel.
Weekend Treatments
- Weekend treatments will be available as needed based upon what is reasonable and appropriate for in-season (conference team championship segment) student-athletes and the Sports Medicine team.
- Therapy will be scheduled on an individual basis.
Off-Campus Transportation
- Student-athletes will be responsible for procuring their own transportation for any non-emergency appointments scheduled off-campus. This includes, but is not limited to office visits with a physician, psychologist, or dietitian, urgent care referrals, diagnostic testing (i.e. X-Ray, MRI, CT Scan), and physical therapy sessions.
- Lehigh University Sports Medicine does not provide transportation for off-campus appointments in accordance with state liability laws. Student-athletes are encouraged to arrange transportation with a teammate, friend, or coach before seeking alternatives that involve personal expense (i.e. Uber, Lyft, taxi, public transportation, etc.).
- In the event of a medical emergency, student-athletes will be transported to St. Luke’s Hospital via ambulance.
Club Sports
Services will be extended as a courtesy to specific club sport programs as defined below:
- Men’s Rowing
- This club sport engages in training and competition under the direction and supervision of the intercollegiate of the intercollegiate Women's Rowing coaching staff. Therefore, full services are provided to support the team.
- Completion of NCAA and Lehigh Athletics medical eligibility requirements is a pre-requisite for participation.
- Women's Wrestling
- This club sport engages in training and competition consistent with an emerging intercollegiate program. Therefore, limited services (as defined by the Women's Wrestling Healthcare Model) are provided to indirectly support the team.
- Completion of NCAA and Lehigh Athletics medical eligibility requirements is a pre-requisite for participation.
- Ice Hockey (space and time pending)
- Injuries - Initial evaluation and referral (as warranted) to Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute
- Concussions - Initial evaluation and referral* to Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute for post-injury management including ongoing evaluation, follow-up care, return to participation progressions, and return to participation clearance.
- Rugby (space and time pending)
- Injuries - Initial evaluation and referral (as warranted) to Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute.
- Concussions - Initial evaluation and referral* to Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute for post-injury management including ongoing evaluation, follow-up care, return to participation progressions, and return to participation clearance.
- Cheerleading (space and time pending)
- Injuries - Situational triage and referral (as warranted) to Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute.
- Concussions - Situational triage and referral to Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute.
Summer Services for Incoming First-Year and Transfer Student-Athletes
- Per NCAA rules, incoming student-athletes are not eligible to receive ongoing Sports Medicine services for injuries sustained during on-campus voluntary strength and conditioning workouts unless one of the following criteria is met:
- Student-athlete’s team is participating in the Summer Access program (Men’s and Women’s Basketball Only)
- Student-athlete is actively enrolled and attending Lehigh summer session classes
- Incoming student-athletes who are not eligible per NCAA guidelines to receive ongoing Sports Medicine services will be referred to Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute for injuries sustained during voluntary summer strength and conditioning workouts.
