Qualifications for Operating a University Vehicle
A University vehicle is defined as any vehicle owned, rented or leased by Lehigh University or any vehicle otherwise under the University's care, custody or control.
Operation of a Lehigh University vehicle is a privilege granted to an individual on a highly selective basis. In addition to the individual's current qualifications, that individual's actual driving experience is considered.
To qualify as an operator of a University vehicle, the individual must meet the following minimum qualifications:
Be a salaried employee, faculty or staff, or be currently enrolled at Lehigh University as a full-time graduate or undergraduate student of at least 18 years of age.
Have a valid domestic driver's license and have at least three (3) years driving experience in the United States or Canada.
Vehicle Rentals
Transportation Services maintains a "pool" of vehicles which are available to the University community at reasonable rates. The types of vehicles available "in-house" are as follows:
Vehicles are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. In the event that a suitable University vehicle is not available, Transportation Services will attempt to obtain a vehicle from an outside vendor. The vendor will be selected based upon vehicle availability, cost, proper insurance coverage, and convenience to the user. Certain additional requirements, such as the driver being at least 21, or possibly even 25, years of age may apply when using an outside vehicle.
Academic requests originate from a faculty member or authorized staff member in support of class field trips and/or other academic/research oriented purposes.Athletic use originates from a coach and is approved by the Athletic Director or an Associate Athletic Director. Administrative requests come from faculty or authorized staff member and are approved by an account executive, in support of various administrative activities. Lehigh students are allowed access to vehicles for various student life-related purposes.
Vehicles may be used for University business purposes only. The use of University vehicles or the use of Transportation Services personnel to obtain a vehicle from an outside vendor for personal use is not permitted.

Operative Travel Practices and Procedures for Athletics
(Inserted in Student-Athlete Handbook, August 2006)
1. Travel by teams for intercollegiate contests or activities related to intercollegiate contests (practices, banquets, etc.) must be arranged in conjunction with the Athletics Department Travel and Business Manager.
2. All arrangements for transportation are made by the Athletics Department Travel and Business Manager in compliance with Athletics Department travel practices.
3. Athletics Department travel practices include the following:
a. Coach buses, operated by certified drivers, are used for all team travel involving teams of more than 12 participants
b. Team travel for teams of 12 or fewer participants, for trips that are less than 150 miles, may utilize 7 passenger mini-vans rented from the University. Driving must be conducted by a member of the department professional staff that has been registered and approved by the Office of Transportation Services as a driver.
c. 15 passenger vans are not permitted for team travel, either regionally or out of the region. Occasionally, use of 15 passenger vans is approved for on-campus, or very local transportation. In such cases, van drivers must have completed the transportation exam.
4. Student-athletes may not drive vehicles used for team transportation.

- Be a part-time (wage) employee or part-time Lehigh graduate or undergraduate student of at least 21 years of age.
- Have a valid domestic driver's license and have at least two (2) years of driving experience in the United States or Canada.
- Complete a Driver Information Form, available on this web site under "Forms", and deliver it -- in person -- to the Transportation Services Office, 126 Goodman Drive, where a staff member will physically verify and photocopy the required driver's license.
- Have, and maintain, an acceptable driving record.
Have a valid domestic driver's license and have at least three (3) years driving experience in the United States or Canada.
- Have successfully completed the prescribed Van Driver training course with proof of completion on file at the Transportation Services office.
