Dean Koski, entering his 33rd season as head coach of the Lehigh Men's Soccer program in 2025, embodies consistent success and dedication to the sport. Since taking over in 1991, Koski has led the Mountain Hawks to three Patriot League Tournament championships (2000, 2015, 2019), two Patriot League regular season titles (2006, 2019), and five NCAA tournament appearances. His tenure has seen the development of five All-Americans, 23 First Team All-Region selections, and 51 First Team All-Patriot League selections. Five of his players - Andrew Mittendorf, Kevin Jackson, Adam Williamson, Adam Welch, and Mark Forrest, have been drafted by MLS franchises.

Koski’s recent accomplishments include coaching and mentoring, Stevo Bednarsky, All-league and United Soccer Coaches All-Region team and currently playing NYFC in the MLS Next Pro league, Jack Sarkos, a 2022 first-team All-Patriot League honoree and United Soccer Coaches All-Region selection currently playing for Crown legacy in the MLS Next pro league, as well as Euan Forrest, who became Lehigh's first two-time College Sports Communications All-District honoree. In 2021, Koski secured his 250th career victory with a win over Lafayette, closing the season with a career record of 253-222-69—the highest win total in program history.

The 2019 season stands out as a landmark year for Koski’s program. Under his leadership, Lehigh captured both the Patriot League Championship and the regular season title, finishing with a 13-5-3 record, an unbeaten league season, and an undefeated home record at Ulrich Sports Complex. This campaign earned Koski his fourth Patriot League Coach of the Year honor, a league record. Key players such as Josh Luchini, the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, and Will Smith, the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, were instrumental to the team's success, with Luchini also named a United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Third Team All-American.

Koski's teams have consistently excelled in academics as well, with numerous players earning spots on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and receiving NSCAA Academic Awards. His 2011 team was recognized as one of the nation’s top defensive teams, ranking second nationally in save percentage and third in goals-against average. Under Koski's guidance, players such as Kevin Strunk and Ciaran Nugent achieved league and national recognition for their defensive prowess.

An advocate for the broader soccer community, Koski has served as a staff coach for both USSF and NSCAA coaching schools and holds multiple coaching diplomas, including the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, USSF “A” license and the England FA Preliminary and International Diplomas. He has chaired the Patriot League soccer coaches committee and been a featured clinician for New York/New Jersey MetroStars. Coach Koski has also presented at the United Soccer Coaches Convention to a national audience.

Koski's impact extends beyond Lehigh to both the local and national youth soccer landscapes. A strong presence in the Lehigh Valley community, he is currently the president of Lehigh Valley United Soccer Club, sits on the board of LVU-Rush, and was recently elected to the ECNL Board of Directors representing the North Atlantic Conference. Previously, Koski served as President of the Lehigh Valley Youth Soccer League and as Chair of the Hanover Township Recreation Board. Koski also sits on the ArtsQuest World Cup 2026 Committee and has spent the past 20 years advising and training parent-coaches for the Greater Bethlehem Soccer League. In addition, he founded and serves as president of the Lehigh Soccer Academy, the longest-running soccer camp in the region, which has trained hundreds of young athletes each summer for over 30 years.

Originally from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Koski played collegiately at West Chester University, where he was an Honorable Mention All-Region and team captain. His playing career at WCU includes an ECC Championship in 1978 and 20 years of amateur soccer in Southern New Jersey and Bethlehem. Koski holds a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from West Chester University and a master’s degree in special education from Bloomsburg University. He lives in Bethlehem with his wife, Lisa, and their four sons, Alec, Trevor, Spencer, and Blake.

For Koski, coaching is more than a profession; it is a passion for teaching and developing. "Coaching soccer is what I do, but teaching and mentoring aligns more with who I am professionally…I am an educator" he says. "The relationships I’ve forged with my players over the years are especially rewarding, particularly after they graduate when I no longer am seen as only their coach. To be an integral part of their lives for four years and watch them develop from boys to men is privilege." His approach emphasizes the holistic development of his players, recruiting individuals who are not only dedicated athletes but also committed students and individuals of high character. “My intentions are to coach, mentor and teach the human being, not the human doing.”

As he continues to lead Lehigh Men’s Soccer, Koski remains focused on fostering a program that values team first, self-discipline, unity, respect, grit, excellence, and resilience—qualities that have defined his career and contributed to the enduring legacy he’s building at Lehigh University.

Since taking over the program in 1991, Koski, the 15th coach in school history, has guided the Mountain Hawks to three Patriot League Tournament championships (2000, 2015, 2019), a pair of Patriot League regular season championships (2006, 2019) and five NCAA tournament appearances. In 2022, Koski coached and mentored Jack Sarkos, a first-team All-Patriot League honoree. Sarkos was also named to the second team United Soccer Coaches All-Region Team. Euan Forrest also became Lehigh's first-ever two-time College Sports Communications All-District honoree.

Koski closed out the 2021 season with a career record of 253-222-69, by far the most wins of any coach in program history. Koski earned his 250th career victory with a 2-0 final over archrival Lafayette October 16, 2022.

Koski led the 2019 Mountain Hawks to their third Patriot League Championship in program history and the team's fifth NCAA Tournament appearance. In addition, Koski led Lehigh to just it's second-ever regular season crown and No. 1 overall seed in the tournament. The Mountain Hawks closed out the 2019 campaign with a 13-5-3 overall record, an unbeaten 6-0-3 record in the Patriot League and an undefeated home record of 7-0-3 at the Ulrich Sports Complex. It was the fifth time in program history that a Lehigh team achieved 13 or more victories in a single season. Six Mountain Hawks received All-Patriot League honors with a program-record four student-athletes landing on the First Team. In addition to the All-League honors, sophomore Josh Luchini was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and senior Will Smith was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year. Luchini, Stevo Bednarsky and Trevor Koski were All-Atlantic Region selections, while Smith and Luchini were All-ECAC honorees for the 2019 season. Luchini was also named a United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Third Team All-American. For his historic season, Koski was named Patriot League Coach of the Year in 2019 for a league-tying record fourth time.

Koski guided the 2015 Mountain Hawks to the program’s second-ever Patriot League Championship and the team’s fourth NCAA Tournament appearance. The Mountain Hawks finished the 2015 season 13-6-3 overall, marking one of four times in program history that Lehigh has secured 13 or more wins in a season. Koski secured the 200th win of his career on Oct. 17, 2015 in a 1-0 victory over Loyola. Lehigh sat atop the Northeast regional rankings in the final regular season NSCAA poll. Four Mountain Hawks garnered All-Patriot League recognition, while three earned All-Region honors. Jamie Luchini became the first-ever Lehigh men’s soccer player to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American and NSCAA Scholar-All-American, while 14 student-athletes earned spots on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Luchini was also invited to the MLS Player Combine and later signed a professional contract with Bethlehem Steel FC.

The 2014 season was a strong turnaround season for the Mountain Hawks as Lehigh captured its first ten-win season since 2006. Koski guided the Mountain Hawks to the No. 4 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and mentored five All-Patriot League selections and a NSCAA All-Region pick. Lehigh finished the season 109 points higher in the NCAA RPI than the prior season as the Mountain Hawks completed the second-best turnaround in Division I. The Mountain Hawks earned their fifth-straight NSCAA Academic Award and ten student-athletes were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

The Mountain Hawks earned their fourth-straight NSCAA Academic Award in 2013, while sophomore Jamie Luchini earned a spot on the Academic All-Patriot League Team. In addition, 11 Mountain Hawks were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

In 2012, Koski guided the Mountain Hawks through a rough early-season stretch. Lehigh finished strong, with three wins and a draw in its final six matches as the Mountain Hawks remained in contention for a spot in the Patriot League Tournament until the very end. During that stretch, the Mountain Hawks lost a tightly-contested 2-1 decision at a top-ranked Maryland team that went on to the Final Four. Sophomore back Ali Famili earned first team All-Patriot League honors, The Mountain Hawks earned their third consecutive NSCAA Academic Award, while 12 student-athletes were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

The 2011 season saw Lehigh boast one of the nation’s stingiest defenses. The Mountain Hawks ranked in the top five nationally in save percentage (2nd – 0.900), goals-against average (3rd – 0.41) and shutout percentage (3rd – 0.61), while allowing just eight goals and posting 11 shutouts in 18 matches. Lehigh qualified for the Patriot League tournament for the third straight season, with a 4-2-1 league mark, but the Mountain Hawks were denied a spot in the league final after losing their semifinal contest on penalty kicks after a scoreless draw to finish the year at 8-4-6 overall. Unsurprisingly, Lehigh received postseason recognition for its superb defensive campaign. Kevin Strunk captured his second straight Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year Award and was named a first team NSCAA All-Region selection as well as a first team ECAC All-Star. Sophomore Ciaran Nugent was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year in his first season as a starter and also earned All-Region accolades. Nugent finished the year ranked third nationally in both goals-against average and save percentage. Senior Neal Melchionni also garnered NSCAA All-Region and first team All-Patriot League honors, while senior Joe Puleo and junior Cam Omsberg garnered second team honors. The men's soccer team was honored for its work in the classroom, earning the NSCAA Academic Award for the second straight year. The award is presented to college soccer squads posting a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.

In 2010, Koski led Lehigh to its second-straight Patriot League semifinal appearance and second-straight second place regular season finish. Also for back-to-back years, the Mountain Hawks had a player with the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year honors as junior Kevin Strunk won the award. In addition, Koski's team garnered numerous awards for on and off the field performance. Sophomore Austin Decker and senior James Graf were named to the All-Patriot League Second Team.Senior goalkeeper Jonathan Nydell was named to the first ever Patriot League All-Academic Team. The team also placed a pair of student-athletes on the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic All-Region team as Strunk and Graf both earned spots.

In 2009, Koski led the Mountain Hawks back to the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since 2006. Adam Welch became the first member of the Brown and White since John O’Reilly (2006) to win Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year honors. In addition, Koski had three players receive regional honors. Welch and classmate Adam Gazda were named 2009 National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team, while Jesse Schram earned Scholar All-East Region second team honors.

Koski won the 150th game of his career during the 2008 season as Lehigh downed the nationally ranked Penn Quakers 2-1 on October 7.

In 2006, Koski guided the Mountain Hawks to their most successful season since 1998 as Lehigh won a record 15 games and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The 2006 team rolled through league play undefeated and became the first team to go through the Patriot League schedule without a loss or a tie. Midway through the season, Lehigh broke into the national polls and was ranked as high as No. 13 - the highest ever for the program. The Mountain Hawks made it to the NCAA Tournament for the third time and, as the No. 16 seed, earned a first round bye. Lehigh hosted the University of Rhode Island in the second round of the Tournament and defeated the Rams 5-4 in a shootout in order to advance to the third round, where Koski’s team would face top-seeded Duke at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. As a result of the 2006 season, Koski earned Patriot League Coach of the Year honors for a third time and was selected as the Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year for the second time.

In 2003, Koski passed yet another milestone, as he recorded career victory No. 100 versus Navy on November 8. Koski became the first coach in Lehigh history to win 100 games, and has the most wins in school history with 152. Koski led Lehigh to 12-consecutive winning seasons from 1996-2007, which is both a Patriot League and school record. By finishing 7-7-3 last season, Koski ensured his streak of not suffering a losing season since 1995.

Under Koski’s direction in 2002, Lehigh climbed as high as No. 14 in the Division I polls and was also ranked atop the Mid-Atlantic Region’s rankings for much of the season. The Mountain Hawks earned the school’s first at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, and hosted Northeastern in the first round. For his efforts, Koski was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second time.

Koski, who holds the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and the England FA Preliminary and International Diplomas, serves as a staff coach for both the USSF and NSCAA coaching schools. The 2000 NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year, Koski also sits on the NCAA Division I Regional Advisory Committee and has chaired the Patriot League soccer coaches committee. He has been a featured clinician for the New York/New Jersey Metro Stars and the North Jersey Imperials.

"Coaching soccer is a passion for me," Koski says when asked why he decided to pursue the profession. "My degree is in education and I yearn to teach. The relationships I have been able to forge with my players is especially rewarding. To be a part of their lives and watch them develop from boys to men is a privilege."

Koski’s love of soccer can be traced back to his collegiate days where he played at West Chester University, which was a Division I program at that time. An Honorable Mention All-American, Koski was one of the top goal scorers in the East Coast Conference and served as the team captain. During his sophomore year, Koski helped lead the Rams to an ECC Championship with a win over American University. Koski continued to play 20 years of amateur soccer in Southern New Jersey and Bethlehem. He just recently retired from the Sunburst Soccer Club, one of the top men’s amateur teams in the country.

Koski says that he recruits players that exhibit the same type of characteristics that he displayed during his career.

"I want a Lehigh soccer player to be passionate, fiercely competitive and committed to being the best player, best student and best person that he can be."

A native of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Koski taught in grades kindergarten through 12, has coached soccer, basketball and baseball and served as director of athletics at Moorestown (New Jersey) Friends School for seven years. It is this vast range of experience that has led Koski to his well-rounded approach at Lehigh.

"We now have a program at Lehigh that places a great value on relationships, commitment, family and competition," Koski says. "I think the involvement in the game of soccer is just one part of the overall experience that a student-athlete gets when he enrolls at Lehigh. We have players that love to play and come here wanting to play."

Since arriving at Lehigh, Koski has signed team contracts with Nike and has established one of the most successful soccer camps regionally, drawing over 700 campers each summer.

Koski has a bachelor’s degree from West Chester University in health and physical education and a master’s degree in special education from Bloomsburg University. Koski and his wife Lisa, a teacher at Clearview Elementary School, reside in Bethlehem with their four sons, Alec, Trevor, Spencer, and Blake.
