Mountain Hawks Sweep Friday Doubleheader From Bucknell

4/4/2025 4:47:00 PM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh rode a pair of strong pitching performances to a doubleheader sweep of Bucknell Friday afternoon at Leadership Park. First-year Madison Finnerty allowed a run on three hits over six innings and was supported by 13 hits as the Mountain Hawks took game one 9-1 in six innings. Junior Chloe Hess fired a two-hit shutout in game two, with senior Lindsey Martin's sixth-inning single providing the offense in a 2-0 Lehigh victory.

Senior Rory Dudley had two hits in each game, while first-year Kelly Fricker totaled five hits, highlighted by a 4-for-4 effort in game one.

Lehigh improves to 17-18 overall and 5-3 in Patriot League play.

The Mountain Hawks struck for three runs in the first inning of game one and never looked back. Fricker reached on an infield single with one out and scored the game's first run on a throwing error after a flyout to center field by Dudley. Senior Maddy Schmeiser and sophomore Holly Lovett added RBI singles in the frame to put Lehigh ahead.

In the fourth, Lehigh added to its lead with four runs. Fricker singled home a pair, senior Julia Mrochko brought home a run with a ground out, and then Dudley singled home Fricker for her 100th career run batted in.

Bucknell (9-22, 0-8 PL) scored its lone run in the top of the fifth, but Lehigh ended the game with two runs in the sixth as Schmeiser scored Fricker with a sacrifice fly and then Martin singled home Dudley.

Finnerty struck out three and worked around five walks to earn her eighth victory of the season, while Fricker became the second Lehigh player in as many games to have a 4-for-4 game.

Game two was a duel between Hess and Bucknell's Savannah Jones. The Bison recorded hits in each of the first two innings, but Hess retired the final 15 batters she faced after hitting Juliette Basso to open the third. Hess struck out two and walked none in Lehigh's first shutout of the season.

Offensively, Lehigh struggled with Jones' off-speed repertoire through the first five innings. Mrochko reached on an error with one out in the frame and then singles by Dudley and Schmeiser loaded the bases for Martin, who lined a two-run single into right field to give the Mountain Hawks the only two runs they needed.

Hess set the Bison down 1-2-3 in the seventh to close out the doubleheader sweep.

Lehigh finished with six hits against Jones, with Dudley leading the way with two.

The Mountain Hawks and Bison will wrap-up their series with a single game Sunday at noon from Leadership Park.
