Lehigh Blanks Holy Cross Twice To Sweep Saturday Doubleheader

4/19/2025 4:38:00 PM | Softball

WORCESTER, Mass. – Behind two strong pitching performances, Lehigh swept a doubleheader from Holy Cross Saturday at Freshmen Field. First-year Madison Finnerty fired a four-hitter with nine strikeouts as Lehigh took the opener 1-0, and then junior Chloe Hess followed with a five-hit shutout as the Mountain Hawks picked up a 5-0 victory.

Offensively, first-year Kelly Fricker delivered four more hits and junior Sydney Parlett drove in two runs in the nightcap as Lehigh improves to 22-20 overall and 10-4 in the Patriot League.

The only run of game one came in the top of the sixth inning. With runners on second and third and one out, sophomore Holly Lovett flew out to shallow right field. A throw home from the Crusader right fielder was errant, allowing senior Lindsey Martin to score an unearned run, which proved to be the only run of the game.

Finnerty picked up her 10th win of the season, striking out nine and walking one. She escaped trouble in the first, thanks to a line drive to center field that turned into an 8-6 double play.

Lehigh left six runners on base through the first three innings and while the Mountain Hawks were unable to score, Finnerty kept the Crusaders at bay.

Holy Cross (7-29, 1-10 PL) put two in scoring position with two outs in the sixth, but Finnerty struck out Jordan Goedel to end the threat.

Finnerty set the Crusaders down in order in the seventh, closing out the win with her eighth and ninth strikeouts of the day.

Fricker, senior Rory Dudley and sophomore Peyton Sward all had two hits in game one.

Lehigh struck for three runs in the top of the first inning of game two. Senior Maddy Schmeiser reached on a fielder's choice and picked up an RBI when Fricker beat the tag on a play at home plate. Senior Julia Mrochko stole home to put Lehigh up 2-0 and then Parlett singled to center, scoring pinch runner Lizzie Kern to give the Mountain Hawks a 3-0 lead.

The Mountain Hawks added two more runs in the sixth with Parlett doubling home Martin and then first-year Helen Woloshyn plating Crysta Duenas with an infield single.

Hess struck out three and did not walk a batter to improve to 9-8 on the season. She retired 14 straight batters before Holy Cross opened the sixth with back-to-back infield singles. A fielder's choice and then a 4-6-3 double play started by Mrochko kept Lehigh ahead by five after six. Hess worked around two more singles in the seventh to secure her second shutout of the season.

The Mountain Hawks and Crusaders will wrap-up their series with a single game Sunday at noon.
