Lehigh Takes Series-Opener From Colgate, 6-5

4/12/2025 4:29:00 PM | Softball

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Five different Lehigh players recorded multiple hits as the Mountain Hawks opened their series at Colgate with a 6-5 victory on a wet, raw Saturday at Eaton Street Field. Lehigh raced to a 5-0 lead only to see Colgate battle back. Junior Chloe Hess induced a foul out to right field to end the game with the tying run at second base.

Senior Lindsey Martin and sophomore Peyton Sward both had two-RBI singles in the victory as Lehigh improves to 19-19 overall and 7-3 in the Patriot League.

Martin staked Lehigh to a 2-0 lead with a two-out RBI single in the first inning. Junior Sydney Parlett led off the second inning with a double and then scored Lehigh's third run when first-year Helen Woloshyn reached on a throwing error.

Sward singled home two more runs in the top of the third to give the Mountain Hawks a 5-0 lead.

Colgate (12-24, 2-5 PL) battled back in the home third, playing three runs on a solo home run by Analisa Raffaelli and a two-run shot by Quinn Livesay.

Lehigh tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when sophomore Holly Lovett singled home Parlett.

The Mountain Hawks needed the run as Colgate rallied for two in the bottom of the seventh. Mia Cascio's one-out RBI double brought the Raiders within two with the tying runs in scoring position. A sacrifice fly to deep left by Alexis Romero made the score 6-5, but Hess got Amanda Desantis to foul out to end the game.

Hess improved to 7-7 behind five innings of relief. She allowed two runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts. First-year Madison Finnerty started and allowed three runs on four hits over two-plus innings. Both Lehigh pitchers benefitted from double plays, with Sward starting a 6-4-3 double play after a leadoff walk in the first, and then Lovett stepped on third and fired to first to turn two and end the sixth.

Lehigh finished with 13 hits against three Colgate pitchers. In addition to Martin and Parlett, first-year Kelly Fricker and seniors Julia Mrochko and Rory Dudley all had two-hit games.

The Mountain Hawks and Raiders will wrap-up their series with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon.
