Six-Run 10th Propels Lehigh To Rivalry Series Sweep

EASTON, Pa. – A six-run 10th inning powered the Lehigh softball team to a 10-4 victory over rival Lafayette Sunday at Metzgar Fields. The Mountain Hawks held leads in the seventh and eighth innings but were unable to close the door on the Leopards. Senior Lindsey Martin's RBI single sparked a six-run 10th, propelling Lehigh to a three-game sweep of Lafayette.
 
First-year pitcher Madison Finnerty threw all 10 innings in the circle, allowing three earned runs on eight hits to earn her second victory of the series. Finnerty struck out 12 Leopards while issuing just one walk.
 
Offensively, Lehigh pounded out 16 hits. Sophomore Holly Lovett went 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Martin and classmates Julia Mrochko and Rory Dudley all had two hits, while Mrochko and first-year Wrigley Fanter had two-run base hits as part of the big 10th inning.
 
Lehigh improves to 15-17 overall, while Lafayette falls to 5-21. Both teams are now 3-3 in league play.
 
Through the first six-and-a-half innings the three combined runs scored came via wild pitches.
 
Lafayette's Mary Grace O'Neill led off the bottom of the first with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
 
In the fourth it was Lehigh's turn as Dudley and then Fanter both game home from third base as Lafayette's Marisa Powell twice lost control of the ball during her windup.
 
Finnerty's eighth and ninth strikeouts stranded O'Neill as the tying run at second base in the sixth inning.
 
Lafayette's Regan Dillon tied the game at 2-2 with one out in the seventh as Lehigh went into extra innings for the third time in six league games.
 
In the eighth, junior Sydney Parlett brought home Dudley with the go-ahead run on a single and Lovett added an insurance run with a run-scoring single.
 
Lafayette tied the game in the bottom of the eighth, Katie Harrington plated O'Neill with a single to right and a throwing error allowed the tying run to score as well. With the winning run on third, first-year Helen Woloshyn made a diving catch of Emma Ahlborn's drive to right center to send the game to the ninth inning.
 
Caroline Hall doubled to center with one out in the ninth, but Finnerty recorded a fly out to left center and then struck out Dani Rosner to keep the game tied at 4-4.
 
Sophomore Peyton Sward started the 10th with a single through the left side and was sacrificed into scoring position. Martin singled to left to give Lehigh a 5-4 lead and Lovett followed with a single to center to give the Mountain Hawks a 6-4 advantage. The Mountain Hawks then loaded the bases and Mrochko drove a double to right center, bringing home two more runs. Fanter capped the inning with a two-run single to center to give Lehigh a six-run cushion.
 
Finnerty set the Leopards down in order in the bottom of the 10th to earn her seventh win of the season.
 
O'Neill and Dillon combined for five of Lafayette's eight hits on the day.
 
The Mountain Hawks will head to Princeton for a non-league matchup Wednesday at 6 p.m. and then will host Bucknell in a three-game Patriot League series April 5-6 at Leadership Park.
