Late Rally Pushes Princeton Past Lehigh Wednesday Evening

Senior Maddy Schmeiser went 4-for-4 at the plate and classmate Lindsey Martin drove in two runs, but the Mountain Hawks fall to 15-18 on the season.

Martin picked up an RBI in the third inning as first-year Kelly Fricker beat the throw home on a tapper back to the circle and then sophomore Holly Lovett followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 lead.

Schmeiser's third hit of the game brought home two runs in the top of the fourth inning to give Lehigh a 4-0 lead.

Play was halted with Lehigh batting and two on and two out in the fifth. When play resumed, senior Julia Mrochko lined out to end the threat.

Princeton (12-12) pulled two runs back in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI fielder's choice by Allison Ha and then a single by Phelps.

Lehigh went back up by four in the top of the sixth as junior Sydney Parlett brought a run home with a sacrifice fly and then Martin singled home junior Crysta Duenas.

Back-to-back home runs by Braeden Hale and Sonia Zhang pulled Princeton back within 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Maria Urban relieved sophomore Maddy Clark in the circle. A walk, a fielder's choice and an error put runners on the corners with one out. Ha delivered an RBI single to tie the game and then with the go-ahead run on third, sophomore Payton Sward made a diving stop on a Phelps grounder and was able to throw her out at first, but Ford was able to score the go-ahead run.

Sward walked with one out in the seventh as the tying run, but Princeton's Cassidy Shaw recorded a pair of ground outs to end the game.

Clark pitched well in the circle through the first four innings, finishing with a line of five runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings pitched. She walked three and struck out three. Urban took the loss allowing two runs on one hit.

Shaw was the third of three Princeton pitchers and earned the win behind two innings of scoreless relief.

Schmeiser had half of Lehigh's eight hits on the evening. Sward was 1-for-1 but drew four walks to reach base five times.

The threat of inclement weather this weekend has forced schedule changes for Lehigh's Patriot League series with Bucknell at Leadership Park. The series-opening doubleheader has been moved up a day to Friday at noon, while the series finale remains set for Sunday at noon. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
