Mountain Hawks Down Penn 7-2 In Home Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Playing at home for the first time in 2025, the Lehigh softball defeated Penn 7-2 Wednesday afternoon at Leadership Park. The Mountain Hawks used a three-run fourth inning and four-run fifth to win for the seventh time in their last nine games.
Sophomore Peyton Sward had two of Lehigh's 10 hits and drove in two runs, with classmate Holly Lovett also driving in two. Junior Abbey Tabaka also had a two hit game as Lehigh heads into league play at 12-14 overall.
Senior Maria Urban matched zeroes with Penn's Kelly Zybura into the bottom of the fourth inning when Lehigh scored three runs.
Junior Sydney Parlett opened the scoring with a single that brought home first-year Helen Woloshyn. A run-scoring fielder's choice by first-year Lizzie Kern brought home a second run and Lovett then plated Kern with a single to left field to give Lehigh a 3-0 lead.
Penn answered in the top of the fifth, plating two runs off two walks and an error, but Lehigh answered in the bottom half with four more runs to establish a five-run cushion.
Senior Rory Dudley brought home the first run of the fifth inning with a single that scored Woloshyn. Lovett later drew a bases-loaded walk and Sward followed with a two-run single up the middle to put the Mountain Hawks up by five.
Kern joined Woloshyn with two runs scored on Wednesday.
Urban fired four scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and a walk before giving way to first-year Madison Finnerty, who allowed two unearned runs on one hit over the final three innings.
The Mountain Hawks will open Patriot League play this weekend when they host Army West Point for a three-game series at Leadership Park. A doubleheader is set for Saturday at noon, followed by a single game Sunday, also beginning at noon.
