Mountain Hawks Drop Florida Finale At FGCU
3/10/2025 8:33:00 PM | Softball
FORT MYERS, Fla. – An early error opened the door for host FGCU to score six unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning and the Lehigh softball team never recovered in a 13-1, five-inning setback against the Eagles Monday at FGCU Softball Complex.
Senior Maddy Schmeiser recorded two of Lehigh's five hits and drove in the Mountain Hawks' lone run with a third-inning single that plated first-year Kelly Fricker.
Leslie Flaherty and Camryn Feast combined to drive in seven runs on just two hits for FGCU (13-18), while the loss drops Lehigh to 7-13 on the season.
The Eagles followed the six-run first inning with two runs in the second, on a Flaherty bases-loaded walk and Feast sacrifice fly.
After Lehigh scored to get within 8-1 in the third, FGCU put up five runs in the bottom of the third to put the game out of reach.
First-year Madison Finnerty started in the circle and was charged with the loss, after allowing six unearned runs on two hits over two-thirds of an inning. She also walked three batters.
Sophomore Maddy Clark allowed seven runs over two innings of relief before giving way to senior Maria Urban, who threw 1.1 scoreless frames.
In addition to Schmeiser's two hits, Fricker, sophomore Peyton Sward and senior Rory Dudley recorded hits for Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks will be back in action this weekend at the UMBC Round Robin Friday-Sunday in Baltimore. Lehigh will open the tournament with games against Manhattan (12:30 p.m.) and host UMBC (5:30 p.m.) on Friday.
