Mountain Hawks Win Two Friday To Open UMBC Round Robin

BALTIMORE – The Lehigh softball team opened action at the UMBC Round Robin with a pair of wins Friday on the Diamond at UMBC. The Mountain Hawks began their day with a 4-1 victory over Manhattan and then closed out day one in Baltimore with an 11-1, five-inning win over host UMBC.

Friday's victories move the Mountain Hawks to 9-13 on the season.

First-year Lizzie Kern had a key three-run double in the win over the Jaspers and Kern also scored three runs against the Retrievers. Sophomore Payton Sward had three RBIs and three runs scored against UMBC, while first-year Kelly Fricker also had a three RBI game.

Kern came up with the bases loaded and two outs against Manhattan (1-13) and cleared the bases with a double to give Lehigh a 3-0 lead in the second inning. The Mountain Hawks added a fourth run in the third on a ground out by senior Julia Mrochko that scored sophomore Gracie Smith.

Manhattan scored its only run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third inning.

Senior Maria Urban scattered eight hits over seven innings with four strikeouts to pick up her first win of the season.

Smith and Mrochko totaled four of Lehigh's eight hits against the Jaspers.

UMBC (4-17) struck first against Lehigh in game two, taking a 1-0 lead on Mikayla Bryant's home run in the second inning. It was all Mountain Hawks after that.

Kern led off the third inning with an infield single and then scored the tying run on a single by Sward. Mrochko doubled to left field with two outs, scoring Sward with the go-ahead run as Lehigh took a lead it would not relinquish.

The Mountain Hawks tacked on five runs in the fourth inning to go up 7-1. Sward brought home a run when she reached on an error with the bases loaded. Fricker followed with a two-run double and senior Maddy Schmeiser plated two more runs with a single in the inning.

Lehigh tacked on four more in the fifth, with first-year Helen Woloshyn drawing a bases-loaded walk, Sward reaching on another error that brought home two more runs, and Fricker adding an RBI single.

Junior Chloe Hess set the Retrievers down in order in the fifth to end the game after five innings. Hess allowed a run on three hits, walking two and striking out six to earn the victory.

Fricker, Schmeiser and senior Rory Dudley all had two hits against UMBC.

The Mountain Hawks continue action at the UMBC Round Robin on Saturday with games against Canisius (2 p.m.) and Manhattan (4:30 p.m.).
