BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh men's track and field team opened their season at home as they hosted Fast Times Before Finals at Rauch Fieldhouse. The meet started with some field events and parts of the heptathlon on Friday afternoon, and continued on Saturday with the rest of the competition.
The competition kicked off with weight throw and pole vault on Friday. First-year Chance Stuart opened up his collegiate career with a third place finish. He threw 15.43 meters to claim the top spot for Lehigh. Sophomore Josh Porter also earned a top five finish. Thanks to an indoor personal best 14.76 meter throw, he landed in fifth. In the pole vault, sophomore Sayyidakbar Akbarov and junior Eli Johnson both cleared the 4.25 meter height. Akbarov edged out Johnson on attempts, giving him fourth place to Johnson's sixth.
Junior Andrew Clark had a career competition throughout the two days of the competition. He set personal best marks in the 60-meter dash, shot put, 60-meter hurdles, and pole vault, which led him to a new indoor personal best score of 4667, a third place finish, and moved him up one spot to eighth on Lehigh's all-time indoor performance list.
Field events continued into Saturday, where Lehigh took home two event wins. Senior Joe Nowakowski won the shot put, where he set an indoor personal best throw of 16.08 meters. Fellow senior Daniel Givens took the win in the triple jump, souring 13.44 meters. First-year Konstantinos Panagopoulos also had a standout day in that event, jumping 12.24 meters to place fourth. Panagopoulos bettered his placement in the long jump, jumping 6.70 meters to earn third place.
The Mountain Hawks were in full control of the sprinting events. Quinten Slaughter started his sophomore season with a 400-meter victory. His time of 52.28 was over a second faster than any other runner in the event. Lehigh did not just have the winner over 500-meters, but all four of the top spots. Sophomore Nick Bressi took the win, running 1:05.98 in his collegiate debut at that distance. That time landed him at number ten on Lehigh's all-time indoor performance list. He was trailed by junior Aidan LaTourette (1:06.37), first-year Mekhi Britt (1:07.63), and junior Logan Haverkamp (1:08.26), who completed the top-four sweep. First-year Cole Swick finished second in his collegiate debut, running 22.56 in the 200-meter. Eddie Moore took fifth place over 60-meters, crossing the line in 6.99.
Lehigh also took the victory in the hurdles. Junior Nathan Oliphant won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.30, which was one-hundredths of a second faster than his previous personal record.
The Mountain Hawks took the win in both relay events of the day. The squad of Derek Coceano, Alex Heidemann, Ben Connell, and Connor Malinger snuck under the eight minute mark to win the 4x800 in 7:58.52. Lehigh followed that up by winning the 4x400. Swick closed the gap and took the lead with under 200-meters to go lead him Haverkamp, Moore, and Tristan Rutledge to 3:29.67 and a victory.
The next chance to compete comes in a month's time, as the Mountain Hawks will compete at the Penn Select in Philadelphia on January 10.
