BETHLEHEM, Pa. – David Buchberger '10 carved out an important role in Lehigh's 2010 Patriot League championship run. The senior from Cincinnati, Ohio shot 46.6% from three on the season and even scored 13 points in Lehigh's 74-59 triumph over Lafayette in the championship game. Now, after years of hard work and schooling, Buchberger finds himself in a new role helping patients battle cancer.
Buchberger recently accepted a position with a private radiation oncology group in the New Hampshire/Massachusetts region. He helps serve the people of this region by providing radiation as part of comprehensive cancer care. However, Buchberger's journey to becoming an oncologist was anything but ordinary.
"After Lehigh, I played basketball overseas for five years," said Buchberger. "In my fifth and final year, I also earned a master's degree from Durham University in the United Kingdom in public policy and global health. As part of this master's degree, I worked with physicians in the UK's National Health Service which inspired me to pursue medical school."
Following his playing career, Buchberger returned to the U.S. and began medical school back home at the University of Cincinnati. In his second year back home, a serious life event inspired him to start specializing in oncology and cancer treatment.
"In my second year of medical school, my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer," said Buchberger. "She received chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery as part of her treatment. I felt most drawn to the radiation aspect of her care, and radiation oncology became my specialty of choice. Unfortunately, my mother lost her battle with cancer in December 2020, but she will always be my inspiration and her memory pushes me to be the best physician I can be."
Following his graduation from UC, Buchberger has been in residency at the Cleveland Clinic for the past five years. After working and learning there from some of the top doctors in the country, Buchberger now sets his sights on the next chapter of his medical journey.
Years removed from his time in Bethlehem, Buchberger still looks very fondly upon his experiences both in the classroom and on the court with the Mountain Hawks.
"The training that I received in the classroom and on the court at Lehigh laid an educational foundation and provided me with many of the necessary tools to navigate medical school and beyond," said Buchberger. "My time with Lehigh men's basketball reinforced the importance of hard work, consistency, perseverance, and teamwork."
Buchberger remains an avid fan of the men's basketball program, even attending the team's game in Ohio against the Dayton Flyers in December. He'll now be cheering on the Mountain Hawks from his new home in New England.
"I remain thankful for the life-long friendships I formed during my time with Lehigh MBB," said Buchberger. "They continue to be a centerpiece of my life to this day."
