Lehigh Takes 16th At Harry Groves Spiked Shoe 5.2-Mile Race

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Lehigh men's cross country took part in its second competition of the year on Friday morning at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe on the campus of Penn State University. The Mountain Hawks ran a 5.2-mile race, placing 16th amongst a solid contingent of participating schools.

"We had higher expectations of ourselves today," said head coach Todd Etters. "A lot of really good teams competed and we didn't measure up to them the way that we wanted to. There are some adjustments we need to make and today we were reminded that nothing in this sport comes easy."

The Mountain Hawks competed against 17 other schools in Saturday's race, including Patriot League sides Navy, Bucknell and Loyola. Lehigh's 16th place finish put the Mountain Hawks ahead of Duquesne and Loyola in the standings.

Senior Kevin Harvey earned Lehigh's top finish after completing the 5.2-mile race in 25:56.9 to claim 45th place out of 197 finishing runners. Senior Aidan Lynch (68th, 26:11.0) and sophomore Ryan Baker (89th, 26:26.7) rounded out the top three for the Mountain Hawks, which marks the second consecutive race that those three have been Lehigh's top three performers.

"Kevin and Aidan led the way and that is expected of two seniors who have had decorated careers," said Etters. "There is some extra pressure to be a front-runner and we are still feeling our way through that with Kevin and Aidan, especially in a bigger race like this. Ryan reinforced the contributions that he made two weeks ago and he is going to be a key contributor for us all season."

Lehigh now looks to next weekend on Saturday, September 21 where the Mountain Hawks will seek a 25th consecutive dual meet victory over rival Lafayette College.

"Sometimes the best way to make up for a disappointing performance is to turn the page and get focused on the next race," said Etters. "Fortunately, we have the Dual against Lafayette next week. I love the Dual because there is only one objective, to beat Lafayette."
