La Salle Edges Lehigh 2-1 On Friday Evening

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Despite a late goal and momentum shift for the Mountain Hawks, the La Salle Explorers defeated Lehigh 2-1 on Friday night at Ulrich Field.

"Despite the outcome tonight, we played true to our style of play and executed our game plan effectively," said head coach Kelsi Lykens. "Unfortunately, we were not able to capitalize on our scoring chances, but Sunday brings a new opportunity and we will attack our game with a fresh mindset."

The Explorers got on the board with less than a minute remaining in the first quarter, carrying a 1-0 lead into the second quarter. Shots for La Salle and Lehigh were even at 5-5 in the first quarter.

Lehigh bounced back in the second quarter, limiting La Salle to one shot on goal and one penalty corner as the Mountain Hawks trailed 1-0 at intermission.

La Salle found its second goal with 6:34 left in the third quarter. A big ball from the backfield connected with the Explorers' Rumbi Zimuto who extended La Salle's lead to 2-0.

With 3:56 left in the third quarter, La Salle earned a penalty stroke opportunity. The Mountain Hawks subbed in sophomore goalkeeper Kate Burgess who came up with the stop, keeping La Salle's lead at 2-0.

The Mountain Hawks grabbed momentum in the fourth quarter, as senior Julia Gatelein put away a straight shot to put Lehigh down 2-1 with 7:13 left in the game.

Lehigh controlled the fourth quarter but couldn't find the equalizer, outshooting La Salle 10-2 and out cornering the Explorers 7-1.

Senior goalkeeper Jenny Canoni made four saves while La Salle's Abby Boggs picked up eight.

Lehigh (2-3) returns home to host Fairfield on Sunday at 1 p.m.
