PENNSAUKEN, N.J. – Lehigh men's rowing concluded the 2023-24 campaign this weekend at the Dad Vail Regatta, one of the country's largest annual races. The first varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice four all competed in three separate races over the course of two days.
"Strong performance to close out the year for the team," said head coach Peter Costas. "Really excited to see improved results against previous opponents in all boats, and a fearless approach that we feel is part of the identity of rowing at Lehigh."
The men's novice four kicked off the weekend's competition for the Mountain Hawks on Friday morning, and performed well in their time trial. Lehigh finished 8th out of 18, crossing the finish line in 8:05.837. The second varsity eight were up next in their time trial, placing 8th out of 12 boats with a time of 7:18.161. Finally, the first varsity eight competed in their time trial against 17 other boats, placing 14th with a time of 6:27.695.
The Mountain Hawks next competed in their respective semi-final races, looking to advance to the grand final race with a top-three finish. Both the first and second varsity eights placed fifth out of six boats in their semifinals while the novice four took sixth in their semifinal heat.
The novice four were placed into a final against Merchant Marines, Army West Point A and B, Stockton and Union. The Mountain Hawks had a successful race, placing second behind Merchant Marines with a time of 7:29.119.
The second varsity eight were matched with Embry Riddle, Delaware, Marietta, Fairfield and Loyola (Md.) in their final race. Lehigh took fourth place in the race, clocking in with a time of 6:31.013.
Finally, the first varsity eight were paired with Embry Riddle, Army West Point, Loyola (Md.), Fairfield and Rollins in their final. The Mountain Hawks claimed fourth place after finishing the race in 6:25.500.
The men's rowing team now sets its sights on the offseason.
"Very proud of how this young team developed and came together through challenges this year, and we look forward to returning the full roster next year," said Costas.
