Lehigh Completes Series Sweep At Bucknell With Two Wins Sunday

4/7/2024 5:26:00 PM | Softball

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team used another outstanding pitching performance from senior Katelyn Young in game one, and an offensive explosion in game two to complete a three-game sweep of Bucknell with two wins Sunday at Becker Field.

Young fired her second complete game shutout in eight days, scattering six hits in a 3-0 Lehigh win in the opening game. The Mountain Hawks then scored four runs in the first and 12 in the sixth to claim a 16-1, six-inning victory in game two.

Lehigh has now won nine straight games to improve to 19-14 overall. The Mountain Hawks reach the midway point of Patriot League play at the top of the standings with a 9-0 mark.

Junior Rory Dudley and graduate student Emily Cimino led the offense Sunday's doubleheader with four hits apiece. Cimino also drove in five runs, including four in game two.

Young's second shutout of the season featured six strikeouts against two walks as she improves to 12-7 on the season. She stranded runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and sixth innings.

Senior Brooke Cannon scored the first run of game one in the fourth inning after hitting a leadoff double and then scoring from third under the tag on a throw back from first base when first-year Holly Lovett attempted to take first on a dropped third strike.

Young worked to preserve the one-run lead. Bucknell put the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at first with two outs in the sixth, but Young got Bella Radican to fly out to right field to end the threat.

Lehigh tacked on two more runs in the seventh on an RBI ground out by first-year Gracie Smith and then a single to left by Cimino.

The Bison got a leadoff single in the seventh but Noelle Gardon was erased on a line drive double play before a pop out ended the game.

The Mountain Hawks started fast in game two, with the first five batters reaching base via an error and four straight hits. Cimino opened the scoring with a double to right center, Cannon followed with a two-run single and then Dudley added a double to right center, putting Lehigh up 4-0 before Bucknell came to bat.

Bucknell (14-20, 5-4 PL) scored its only run of the day in the sixth inning when Marisa Rapino scored on an error following a Gardon single.

Lehigh broke the game open in the sixth inning as the Mountain Hawks plated 12 runs on 10 hits. The Mountain Hawks were aided by three Bison errors in the frame. Cimino had a pair of RBI singles in the inning. Junior Lindsey Martin delivered a pinch-hit single to bring home the first of the 12 runs. Junior Maddy Schmeiser, sophomore Abbey Tabaka and first-year Maddy Clark got into the act with three consecutive RBI singles and Smith added a two-run single as part of the onslaught.

Junior Maria Urban allowed one unearned run on six hits over five innings to earn the victory. Sophomore Chloe Hess pitched a 1-2-3 sixth to close out the game in her first action since March 24.

Lehigh pitching did not allow an earned run over 20 innings in the three-game series sweep.

The Mountain Hawks will visit Drexel for a single game Wednesday at 3 p.m. Lehigh is off from league play next weekend and will play a non-league doubleheader at Marist on Saturday, April 13. The Mountain Hawks' next league series will be against rival Lafayette April 20-21 at Leadership Park.
