LEWISBURG, Pa. – After giving up an unearned run in the top of the first, the Lehigh softball team battled back with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings as the Mountain Hawks captured their seventh straight victory, defeating Bucknell 2-1 Saturday at Becker Field.
Junior Julia Mrochko tied the game with an RBI ground out in the fifth and senior Brooke Cannon put Lehigh ahead with a two-out RBI double in the sixth as the Mountain Hawks improve to 17-14 overall and 7-0 in Patriot League play.
Reigning Patriot League Pitcher of the Week Katelyn Young delivered another strong outing, allowing just one unearned runs on four hits in a complete game effort with eight strikeouts and no walks. The senior is now 11-7 on the season.
Bucknell (14-18, 5-2 PL) capitalized on an error to open the bottom of the first and loaded the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly by Angelina Seropian gave the Bison a 1-0 lead, but it would be the only run of the day for the hosts.
In the fifth, junior Rory Dudley led off with a double to left. A sacrifice bunt by first-year Holly Lovett moved Dudley to third before Mrochko plated her with a ground out to the right side.
Cannon came up in the sixth with two on and two out and doubled down the left field line, scoring graduate student Josie Charles to give Lehigh a 2-1 lead.
Young allowed two-out singles in both the sixth and seventh innings to put the tying run aboard, but on both occasions came up with inning-ending strikeouts.
Lehigh finished with five hits off Madison Roukey, with graduate student Emily Cimino (triple) and first-years Gracie Smith and Peyton Sward (singles) joining Dudley and Cannon.
The Mountain Hawks and Bison will wrap-up their series with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
