MERCER, N.J. – Lehigh men's rowing competed at the Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) championships on Sunday, entering four boats in four different races. Lehigh's first and second varsity eight both took home third place, the varsity four finished sixth while the novice four earned second place in their grand final.
"The full team showed up to race hard," said Steven J. '69 & Karen A. Lee head coach Peter Costas. "The quality of leadership on the roster has been tremendously impactful in preparing our first-year class for the tone and intensity it takes to compete at this level. Excited to see strong, complete pieces across the board in all four grand finals."
The first event of the day for Lehigh was the qualifying heat for the varsity four, which saw the Mountain Hawks face the likes of George Washington, Catholic and St. Mary's (Md.). The Mountain Hawks finished in second place at a time of 7:32.71, qualifying them for the grand final later that day.
Next up was the first varsity eight, who entered the day as the defending MARC champions. The Mountain Hawks raced against Bucknell, Washington College, Villanova and Franklin & Marshall in their heat. Lehigh crossed the finish line in 6:17.40 to finish in first place and advance to the grand final.
The second varsity eight also took home first prize in their heat, clocking in at 6:21.90. They outpaced George Washington, Bucknell and Villanova to advance to their grand final round.
The first championship race of the day for Lehigh was in the novice four, which was also the only race that boat would compete in all day. The Mountain Hawks performed admirably, finishing in second place with a time of 7:29.11.
In the grand final for Lehigh's varsity four boat, the Mountain Hawks squared off against Bucknell, Adrian, Stockton, George Washington, and Catholic. Lehigh finished in sixth place with a time of 7:32.34.
The Mountain Hawks took third prize in the second varsity eight grand final, clocking in at a time of 6:13.80 to claim bronze. Bucknell and George Washington finished ahead of Lehigh while the Bison's B and C boats as well as Catholic finished behind the Mountain Hawks.
Finally, the first varsity eight took to the water in the grand final in Lehigh's final race of the day. The Mountain Hawks took third place in the race with a time of 6:08.59, which was faster than MSOE, Catholic and Washington College. George Washington and Bucknell finished ahead of Lehigh in the grand final.
The men will return to action on Friday, May 10 at the Dad Vail Regatta in Pennsauken, New Jersey.
"We are excited to take another step between now and Dad Vails and build on the trust that the moment wasn't too big for this young group," said Costas.
