Lehigh Splits Saturday Twin Bill At Army West Point

4/27/2024 5:05:00 PM | Softball

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Graduate student Emily Cimino went 4-for-7 with six runs batted in as the Lehigh softball team split a doubleheader with Army West Point Saturday at the Army Softball Complex. The Black Knights snapped Lehigh's 17-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory in game one, but the Mountain Hawks bounced back, claiming game two 10-2 in five innings.

With Saturday's split, Lehigh is now 28-15 overall and 13-1 in the Patriot League. Army is 12-33 overall and 7-7 in league play.

After staking Lehigh to a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first inning of game two, Cimino delivered the biggest blow of the game in the second inning, hitting a grand slam to left center, which put the Mountain Hawks up 7-2 after an inning and a half.

Junior Rory Dudley added an RBI double in the first inning to put Lehigh up 2-0 before the Black Knights came to bat. Caitlyn Newburn tied the game with a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the first.

First-year Gracie Smith preceded Cimino's grand slam with an RBI single to give Lehigh a 3-2 lead.

Lehigh scored three more runs in the fifth, capitalizing on two Army errors, with junior Lindsey Martin, graduate student Josie Charles and Smith picking up RBIs.

Junior Maria Urban came in for sophomore Chloe Hess to throw a 1-2-3 fifth to end the game.

Hess earned her sixth win of the season, allowing two runs on two hits over four innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

Lehigh had 10 hits in game two, with Cimino leading the way by going 3-for-4.

In game one, Army scored two runs in the bottom of the first and thwarted numerous Lehigh scoring chances in the later innings.

RBI singles by Ashton White and Lauren Little gave Army a 2-0 lead. Lehigh pulled a run back in the third when Cimino doubled home Charles. The Mountain Hawks left 10 runners on base for the game, including two in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Little added another RBI single in the sixth to put the Black Knights up 3-1. Lehigh put the leadoff batter on but was unable to tie the game.

First-year Holly Lovett reached base all three times at the plate in the opener, going 2-for-2 with a hit by pitch. Lehigh out-hit Army 8-6.

Senior Katelyn Young suffered her first loss since mid-March, allowing three runs on six hits over six innings. She struck out three and walked one.

Olivia Farris went five innings for Army before giving way to Breanna Izzo.

The Mountain Hawks and Black Knights will wrap up their series on Sunday with a single game beginning at noon. Sunday's ESPN+ broadcast has been canceled but live stats will be available.
