Lehigh Visits Army For Three-Game Weekend Series

4/26/2024 9:30:00 AM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh heads to Army West Point this weekend for a three-game series, scorching hot, having won its last 17 games. The Mountain Hawks (27-14, 12-0 PL) are tied with Stony Brook for the nation's longest winning streak. Over the streak, Lehigh is out-scoring its opponents 113-25, and is averaging 6.6 runs per game.

The Mountain Hawks are coming off an 8-2 victory against Saint Joseph's where they turned four Saint Joseph's errors into runs as Lehigh scored three runs in the first inning and five in the third.

Graduate student Josie Charles and senior Brooke Cannon both went 3-for-4 against the Hawks. Charles earned honorable mention from the Patriot League earlier in the week after a big weekend last weekend in Lehigh's three-game sweep of rival Lafayette.

Lehigh also boasts the league's Rookie of the Week in shortstop Peyton Sward, who leads Lehigh with a .416 batting average and is near the top of the Mountain Hawks' team leaders in runs scored, hits, triples and stolen bases.

In the circle, senior Katelyn Young has thrown a complete game shutout in four consecutive weekends, including a no-hitter last Saturday against Lafayette.

Army West Point (11-32, 6-6) is coming off a doubleheader split against Seton Hall at West Point, N.Y. winning the first game 2-1 and losing the nightcap 4-3. The Black Knights also dropped two games to UAlbany on Tuesday. Army was off from league play last weekend, having last won 2-of-3 from Lafayette April 13-14.

Kayla Edwards and Ashton White lead the Black Knights offensively. Edwards leads the team with a .379 average, 33 runs scored, and 15 doubles. White is batting .362 and leads the team with three home runs and 31 RBIs.

Lehigh leads the all-time series 101-43. Last year the Mountain Hawks swept three from the Black Knights at Leadership Park and then beat Army in the opening round of the Patriot League Tournament before the Black Knights ended Lehigh's season with a 6-2 win in the semifinals.

The Mountain Hawks' 17-game winning streak is a program record. Lehigh won 15 consecutive games in 2015 during a Patriot League championship season that culminated with a 40-9 record.

Action both days will begin at noon from the Army Softball Complex with Saturday featuring a doubleheader and Sunday being a single game. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Following this weekend's series, Lehigh will host Princeton Tuesday before closing out the regular season at Boston University with three games May 4-5.
