Lehigh Tops Saint Joseph's 8-2 For 17th Straight Victory

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team turned four Saint Joseph's errors into two big innings as the Mountain Hawks scored three runs in the first and five in the third on the way to an 8-2 victory Wednesday at Leadership Park.
Â
Graduate student Josie Charles and senior Brooke Cannon both went 3-for-4 to lead the offense as Lehigh picked up its 17th consecutive victory to improve to 27-14 on the season. With the win, Lehigh pulls even with Stony Brook for the nation's longest current winning streak.
Â
Lehigh's three-run first inning began with graduate student Emily Cimino up and first-year Gracie Smith on first. Cimino's ground ball to second was booted allowing her to reach safely and then a throwing error by Gianna Muhaw allowed Smith to come around and score the game's first run. Cannon and first-year Holly Lovett added RBI singles as Lehigh led 3-0 after one inning.
Saint Joseph's (19-24) struck back with two runs in the second on Lauren Pscolka's double to right center before sophomore Chloe Hess escaped the inning without any further damage.
Â
Junior Julia Mrochko came up with the bases loaded and nobody out in the third and brought home two runs when Meghan Sinkus couldn't make the catch on a fly ball to right center. Mrochko eventually scored on a throwing error by the Hawks' catcher following a wild pitch to put Lehigh up 6-2. A triple to left by Charles and a single up the middle by Smith brought home two more runs as the Mountain Hawks led 8-2 after three.
Â
Lehigh finished with 10 hits off two Saint Joseph's pitchers but was kept off the board over its final three times at-bat.
Â
Hess evened her season record at 5-5 after allowing two runs on five hits over four innings. She struck out three and walked one. Junior Maria Urban followed with two innings of two-hit, scoreless relief before senior Katelyn Young closed out the game with a scoreless, one-hit seventh inning.
The Mountain Hawks return to Patriot League play this weekend when they travel to Army West Point for a three-game series. Lehigh and Army will play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday with action both days beginning at noon.
