3/31/2024 3:02:00 PM | Softball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Katelyn Young struck out a career-high 14 batters in her first complete game shutout of the season as Lehigh completed a three-game sweep of Holy Cross with a 4-0 victory Sunday at Leadership Park.
Â
Young allowed just three hits and one walk with her 14 strikeouts as she improves to 10-7 on the season. She finished with 26 strikeouts in 14 innings against the Crusaders on the weekend after tying her previous career high with 12 strikeouts in Saturday's first game. Young now has nine career complete game shutouts.
Â
Sophomore Sydney Parlett broke the scoreless tie with a two-out RBI double in the fifth inning and the Mountain Hawks added on three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Â
Lehigh is now 16-14 overall and 6-0 after two weekends of Patriot League play. Holy Cross opens its league season with three losses and is now 7-16 overall.
Â
Young matched zeroes with Holy Cross' Megan Yurchick through the first four and a half innings, with Young working out of a two-on, two-out jam in the second, and then stranding runners at second base in each of the next three innings.
Lehigh finally got to Yurchick in the fifth when junior Julia Mrochko singled to left center with two outs. Parlett followed with her second hit of the game, a well-struck double to right center, with Mrochko racing around the bases with the game's first run.
A pinch-hit single by junior Lindsey Martin jump started a rally for the Mountain Hawks in the sixth. Three consecutive two-out hits plated three more runs for Lehigh, with senior Brooke Cannon, junior Rory Dudley and senior Amanda Greaney driving in the runs. Dudley's hit was a double.
Â
Young set down the final nine batters she faced. In the seventh, Young fanned Emma Pietrzak to establish a new career high of 13 strikeouts, and then struck out Claire McCann to end the game. Young struck out one batter in the first, three in the third and two in every other inning.
Â
Lehigh finished with seven hits off Yurchick and Sophia Roncone, with Parlett the only Mountain Hawk to record multiple hits.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will next host Princeton on Wednesday in their Pride Game, presented by Lehigh's Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Equity, with game time set for 3:30 p.m. from Leadership Park.
