Young, Urban Pitch Mountain Hawks To Saturday Sweep Of Holy Cross

3/30/2024 4:56:00 PM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team benefitted from a pair of strong pitching performances and got enough timely hits to sweep a Patriot League doubleheader from Holy Cross Saturday at Leadership Park.

Senior Katelyn Young tied a career high with 12 strikeouts as Lehigh took the opener 5-1. Junior Maria Urban followed by allowing one unearned run over seven innings as the Mountain Hawks took the nightcap 4-1.

At the plate, junior Rory Dudley had the biggest hit of game one, a two-run single in the fourth inning. First-year Peyton Sward had a pair of doubles in game two and Lehigh took the lead for good on a two-run double by senior Brooke Cannon.

Lehigh is now 15-14 on the season and 5-0 in the Patriot League. Holy Cross falls to 7-15 overall and opens league play at 0-2.

Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of game one when Ava Gambichler doubled with two outs and then scored on a bloop double down the right field line by Ali Sniegocki.

The Crusaders' Megan Yurchick retired the first 10 Mountain Hawk batters before first-year Gracie Smith reached on a one-out double in the fourth. Three batters later, Dudley came up with runners on second and third and singled through the left side, scoring Smith and Emily Cimino to put Lehigh up 2-1.

Lehigh added three runs in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk by graduate student Josie Charles, an error that allowed pinch-runner Crysta Duenas to score, and an RBI ground out by Cimino.

Young allowed five hits in the circle, but did not allow a hit over the final three innings, and retired nine of the final 10 batters she faced. She recorded all three outs via strikeout in the second inning and recorded a pair of strikeouts in the third, sixth and seventh innings. The 12 strikeouts matched her career high set last season against UMass-Lowell.

In game two, Lehigh took a 1-0 lead in the third inning in back-to-back doubles by senior Amanda Greaney and Sward. Holy Cross pulled even in the fourth on Morgan Jensen's RBI single and on the same play, Charles threw out pinch runner Abbie Gold at the plate while attempting to score the go-ahead run.

Sward started the rally in the fifth with a leadoff hustle double. Cannon came up with runners on second and third and two outs and doubled to left center, scoring Sward and Charles with the go-ahead runs. Lehigh added another run in the sixth as junior Julia Mrochko scored from second when Sward reached on a throwing error.

Urban allowed one unearned run on six hits on the way to her fifth win of the season. She walked two batters and struck out one.

Sward had two of Lehigh's five hits in the nightcap.

Lehigh and Holy Cross will wrap-up their series with a single game Sunday beginning at noon. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
