CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Lehigh softball team ended the Rawlings Classic on a high note as the Mountain Hawks defeated Iowa State 4-2 Sunday in their final game of the weekend at Palmer Park. Junior Julia Mrochko's two-run third-inning single proved to be the difference offensively, while senior Katelyn Young added a strong effort in the pitcher's circle to earn her second victory of the season.
Â
Sunday's win sends the Mountain Hawks home with a 3-9 record.
Â
Lehigh scored two runs in the first and two in the third while capitalizing on three Cyclone errors.
Â
First-year Gracie Smith scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch in the first and then senior Brooke Cannon came home when junior Rory Dudley reached on an error to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 lead after one inning.
Â
Iowa State (7-7) pulled a run back in the top of the third on Angelina Allen's RBI single, but Lehigh answered in the bottom half. A single, a fielder's choice, an error and a sacrifice put two runners in scoring position with one out and Mrochko delivered her two-run single, extending Lehigh's lead to 4-1.
Â
Ashley Minor's RBI single pulled Iowa State within 4-2 in the fifth, but Young worked out of trouble and then retired six of the seven batters she faced over the final two innings to secure the victory.
Â
Young (2-4) allowed two runs on six hits in a complete-game effort. She struck out four and walked three.
Â
Lehigh finished with seven hits, led by Cannon, who went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will be off next weekend and will return to action when they begin spring break with a trip to California with five games at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament II, March 8-10. Lehigh will play three games against Utah Tech and two against host UC Santa Barbara.
