HARRISONBURG, Va. – Lehigh opened James Madison's Weiler Orthodontics Invitational with a pair of tough losses Friday at Bank of the James Field at Veterans Memorial Park. The Mountain Hawks raced to a 1-0 lead only to see host James Madison score eight unanswered runs to take Lehigh's first game of the day 8-1. Game two was a tightly-contested affair with defending Atlantic-10 champion George Mason scratching across an unearned run in the sixth, which was the difference in a 1-0 win for the Patriots.
Â
The losses drop Lehigh to 2-4 on the young season.
Â
The Mountain Hawks were held to nine hits across the two games. First-year Gracie Smith led the way, going 3-for-4 against George Mason. Senior Brooke Cannon had two hits against GMU while junior Julia Mrochko had a hit in each game.
Â
Lehigh took a 1-0 lead over host JMU in the top of the first inning when first-year Peyton Sward scored on a run-scoring fielder's choice by Cannon.
Â
James Madison (6-1) tied the game in the bottom of the first when Bella Henzler scored on an attempted double steal. Henzler homered to left center to lead off the third and the Dukes added two more runs in the frame to take a 4-1 lead after three innings.
Â
The Dukes added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and plated two more in the sixth on Reed Butler's two-run single.
Â
Sward, Mrochko and senior Amanda Greaney had Lehigh's hits against JMU.
Â
Sophomore Chloe Hess started in the circle and went the first 2.2 innings before giving way to first-year Maddy Clark. Both Lehigh pitchers had identical lines, allowing four runs on six hits with four walks and a strikeout.
Â
Payton List walked four over two-plus innings for James Madison before giving way to Alissa Humphrey, who allowed just two base runners over the final five.
Â
Lehigh out-hit George Mason in its second game of the day, but the Mountain Hawks left eight runners on base and were hurt by a pair of rally-ending double plays.
Â
Senior Katelyn Young limited the Patriots (1-4) to just three hits, two of which came in a scoreless bottom of the first.
Â
Charlotte Montgomery led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and Rachel Warrens replaced her at first base following a fielder's choice. Warrens stole second and then came all the way around to score the only run of the game on a throwing error.
Â
A walk to Clark and two-out singles by Mrochko and Smith loaded the bases for Lehigh in the seventh, but Sward lined out to third to end the game.
Â
Young allowed just one unearned run on three hits with no walks and five strikeouts, but was saddled with the loss.
Â
Carly Cooper scattered six hits with three walks and five strikeouts to earn the shutout for George Mason.
Â
The Mountain Hawks are scheduled to play two more games Saturday at the Weiler Orthodontics Invitational. Lehigh will face Villanova at 1:30 p.m. and then will have a rematch with George Mason at 4:30 p.m.
