
Mountain Hawks Drop Slugfest To JMU On Final Day Of Weiler Orthodontics Invitational

A five-run top of the fourth inning staked Lehigh to a 9-4 lead but the Dukes answered with 13 unanswered runs, hitting three home runs in the process, to rally for the victory.

Graduate student Josie Charles returned to the Lehigh lineup, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs as Lehigh falls to 2-5 on the season. JMU improves to 7-1.

JMU opened the scoring on Reed Butler's RBI double in the first inning before Lehigh answered with a four-run top of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead.

Lehigh loaded the bases with nobody out and three batters later, senior Amanda Greaney's fly ball to right turned into a two-base error, allowing three runs to score, giving the Mountain Hawks a 3-1 advantage. Two batters later Charles singled home pinch runner Maddy Schmeiser to cap the four-run inning.

James Madison tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the third on a Jasmine Hall RBI single followed by a two-run single by Butler.

Charles kick-started a big inning for the Mountain Hawks in the fourth as she came up with the bases loaded and one out and delivered a two-run single up the middle to put Lehigh up 6-4. Graduate student Emily Cimino followed with an RBI double and senior Brooke Cannon drove home two more with a single to put Lehigh up 9-4 after three and a half innings of play.

The Dukes used the long ball and capitalized on a Lehigh error to tie the game in the fifth. Hall brought JMU within 9-6 with a two run home run and after an error prolonged the inning, Madison Edwards connected on a three-run blast to left to tie the game at 9-9.

Hall struck again for James Madison in the bottom of the sixth, with a two-run double to give the Dukes an 11-9 lead. Lehigh was unable to get out of the inning without any further damage. Isabelle Fishman and Edwards delivered RBI hits for the Dukes in the frame before Kate Carrier hit a game-ending grand slam down the left field line.

Jasmine Hall was 3-for-3 with five RBI and four runs scored to lead JMU. The Dukes out-hit Lehigh 13-8.

Junior Maria Urban started in the circle for Lehigh and allowed four runs (three earned) over 2.1 innings. Senior Katelyn Young also went 2.1 in the circle and allowed five runs, only two of which were earned. Sophomore Chloe Hess got the last out of the fifth and pitched the sixth inning for Lehigh, taking the loss.

The Mountain Hawks will return to Virginia next weekend to play in the Rawlings Classic, hosted by Virginia, Feb. 23-25. Lehigh will face Delaware, Iowa State and Virginia beginning with a 12:30 p.m. contest against Iowa State on Friday.
