2/10/2024 11:40:00 PM | Softball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Inclement weather created a long but productive day for the Mountain Hawks on day two of the Aggie Classic Saturday at Davis Diamond. Lehigh's opening game against Valparaiso was halted due to rain after 40 minutes. Seven hours and several schedule changes later Lehigh returned to the field and took two games from Valpo.
Â
Lehigh led 4-0 when play was halted Saturday morning. The Mountain Hawks went on to win game one 11-0 in five innings and then took the rematch Saturday night 7-0.
Â
The Mountain Hawks outhit the Beacons 28-7 over the two games with Lehigh pitchers throwing 12 shutout innings.
Â
Half of Lehigh's 28 hits came from the trio of senior Josie Charles (5-for-8), and first-years Peyton Sward (5-for-5) and Gracie Smith (4-for-6). The Mountain Hawks finish their first tournament of the season at 2-2.

Lehigh wasted little time getting started in both games Saturday, scoring three runs in the first inning of both contests.
Â
In game one, sophomore Sydney Parlett opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly that scored Smith. Junior Lindsey Martin followed with a two-run double to give the Mountain Hawks a three-run lead after one inning of play.
Â
Right before the rain delay, Smith brought Sward home with a sacrifice fly after Sward laced a one-out triple.
Â
Play resumed just before 6 p.m. local time with the Mountain Hawks breaking game one open behind a seven-run fourth inning. Smith and Charles delivered RBI singles while Sward scored from third on a throwing error on a double steal attempt. Consecutive two-run pinch-hit singles by sophomore Abbey Tabaka and junior Maddy Schmeiser capped the inning.
Â
Junior Maria Urban started in the circle and earned her first career complete-game shutout, allowing just one hit and one walk over five innings.
Â
Lehigh had 12 hits in the opener, with Charles going 3-for-3 to lead the way.
Â
The Mountain Hawks scored three in the top of the first inning of game two, capitalizing on three hits and a Valpo error. Graduate student Emily Cimino and Parlett delivered RBI singles and senior Amanda Greaney capped the frame with a sacrifice fly.
Â
Lehigh added on two runs in the fifth on a sacrifice squeeze bunt by Greaney and a RBI single to center by Tabaka, and two more in the seventh on a two-run triple by Charles.
Â
Cimino and Sward both had three hits as part of a 16-hit attack.
Â
Senior Katelyn Young and sophomore Chloe Hess combined on a six-hit shutout. Young went the first four innings allowing two hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Hess struck out three and allowed four hits in three scoreless innings.
Â
As part of the weather-related schedule changes, Lehigh will no longer play a game Sunday at the Aggie Classic. Host Texas A&M will face Tulsa twice.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will return to action next weekend at the Weiler Orthodontics Invitational, Feb. 16-18 in Harrisonburg, Va. Lehigh will face host JMU and George Mason on Friday, beginning at 1:30 p.m. and then Villanova and George Mason in the same window on Saturday before closing out action against James Madison.
