Lehigh Visits Georgetown Saturday In Key Patriot League Clash

10/29/2024 2:09:00 PM | Football

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Coming off a 33-19 home win over Fordham, Lehigh heads to Washington, D.C. to battle Georgetown Saturday at Cooper Field. The Mountain Hawks scored 33 unanswered points to take control against Fordham, as Lehigh snapped a two-game slide and picked up its first Patriot League win. Lehigh won a pair of Patriot League weekly awards with graduate student linebacker Mike DeNucci named Defensive Player of the Week and first-year running back Jaden Green recognized as Rookie of the Week. The Mountain Hawks will face a Georgetown squad that moved to 2-1 in league play after a 21-20 home win over Bucknell.

Graduate student linebacker Mike DeNucci was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after spearheading Lehigh's strong defensive effort in its win over Fordham. DeNucci registered 11 tackles and added four tackles for loss and three sacks, establishing a new career high for tackles for loss and tying his career high in sacks. Lehigh limited Fordham to just 226 yards of offense, including 135 through the first three quarters as the Mountain Hawks built a 33-3 lead. A two-time second team All-Patriot League honoree, DeNucci was Lehigh's top tackler in 2022 and ranked second in tackles last season. He leads Lehigh with 55 stops this season and has added 6.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. The Denville, N.J. native continues to rise up Lehigh's career defensive leaderboards. DeNucci ranks eighth in school history in career tackles (275), tackles for loss (34) and sacks (16.5).

First-year Jaden Green won his second Patriot League Rookie of the Week award after rushing for a career-high 147 yards in the victory over Fordham. Green scored his fifth touchdown of the season on a 44-yard rush to give Lehigh a lead it would not relinquish. The San Francisco native was also honored after an 18-carry, 82-yard, two-touchdown effort in the Mountain Hawks' win over Princeton. For the season, Green has rushed for 380 yards and is averaging nearly five yards per carry. He has also been Lehigh's primary kickoff returner and is averaging 25.5 yards on 15 returns, with a long of 49 yards against Wagner.

All four Lehigh touchdowns in the Mountain Hawks' 33-19 victory over Fordham were scored by first-year student-athletes. Jaden Green opened Lehigh's scoring with a 44-yard touchdown rush. Matt Machalik scored two touchdowns on a pair of two-yard runs. Right before halftime, Hayden Johnson connected with Matt D'Avino on a 33-yard scoring strike. It marked the first time this century (and likely well beyond) that Lehigh's first-year class scored four touchdowns in one game.

Lehigh is 20-2 against Georgetown since the Hoyas joined the Patriot League in 2001, and the Mountain Hawks have outscored the Hoyas by an average of 34-14.5 in those games. The Mountain Hawks are 10-1 against Georgetown both home and away over those last 22 meetings. The Hoyas' lone home win in the series since 2001 came in double overtime at Cooper Field in 2018. Lehigh won 17 straight games over Georgetown from 2001-2017 and had three shutouts during that streak (2002, 2007, 2009).

Georgetown brings a 5-3 overall mark and 2-1 Patriot League record into Saturday's game. The Hoyas own league wins over Lafayette and Bucknell with their league loss coming at Colgate on Oct. 19. Last time out, Georgetown erased an early 14-0 deficit to defeat Bucknell 21-20 at Cooper Field. Savion Hart rushed for 114 yards and a touchdown, while Bryce Cox also eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark with 104 and a score. Georgetown leads the Patriot League in scoring defense, third down defense and sacks. GianCarlo Rufo is the top tackler with 57 stops and has 4.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. Cooper Blomstrom has 11 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks to go along with 41 tackles. Danny Lauter is Georgetown's primary quarterback and is completing 62 percent of his passes for 1,651 yards, with 10 touchdown passes and eight interceptions. Jimmy Kibble leads the receiving corps with 40 catches for 651 yards and three touchdowns.

Lehigh and Georgetown meet for the 29th time with the Mountain Hawks leading the series 21-7.  Georgetown's double-overtime win in 2018 snapped a 17-game Lehigh winning streak in the series. The Brown and White met the Hoyas for the first time in 1901 and the teams did not meet between 1926 and 2001. Lehigh is 20-2 overall against Georgetown, since the Hoyas joined the Patriot League in 2001.
