Lehigh Falls 60-57 To Colgate In Defensive Struggle

1/22/2024 10:49:00 PM | Men's Basketball

HAMILTON, N.Y. – All eyes were on Lehigh and Colgate on Monday evening, as the two teams squared off in front of a national audience on CBS Sports Network. The Mountain Hawks gave the defending Patriot League champions all they could handle, but the Raiders ultimately came away with a narrow 60-57 win.

"We battled and we competed. That's a team that you have to be physical with, and in the second half we held them down on the offensive glass," said head coach Dr. Brett Reed. "Our team ended up producing some defensive results, holding them to 24 second half points."

Monday night's game was the first of three nationally broadcast games on CBS Sports Network scheduled for Lehigh (5-13, 2-5 PL) this season. The team will meet Colgate (12-8, 6-1 PL) again on March 2 at home in what will be the Patriot League regular season finale.

The Mountain Hawks were once again undermanned, as Keith Higgins Jr. remained out while Jalin Sinclair missed his second consecutive game. However, this did not stop Lehigh from coming out of the gates hot in front of a hostile home crowd. The team opened the night on a 10-4 run, which included points from four different players.

The Raiders, having only dropped one league contest entering the night, were not easily put away. Colgate cut into the narrow Lehigh lead, eventually tying the contest 16-16 with under 11 minutes to play in the half. Two quick buckets from Tyler Whitney-Sidney and Nasir Whitlock put the Mountain Hawks back up by four, but the lead would change hands multiple times before the buzzer sounded. After a Dominic Parolin triple put Lehigh by four with 3:45 remaining, three late Colgate triples allowed the Raiders to take a 36-30 lead into the locker room.

After playing through the majority of the second half, the game's result still remained in the balance. Lehigh had been playing from behind for the majority of the second stanza until six unanswered points allowed the Mountain Hawks to take a 55-54 lead with 5:05 remaining in the contest. Colgate quickly regained the lead on the ensuing possession, but this time held onto it for good. No scoring took place from either side in the final 2:45 of regulation, and the Raiders picked up their sixth Patriot League win.

Shot-making proved to be difficult for both sides throughout the game, as Lehigh (31.6%) and Colgate (39.3%) each posted sub-40% shooting splits on the night. As a result, the game remained within single digits on both sides the whole way through.

Although many shots weren't falling, the Mountain Hawks found great success at the free throw line. Lehigh shot 70.8% (17-24) from the charity stripe, and free throws accounted for 10 of the team's 27 points in the second half.

"We had gotten to the line, we attacked at the line and that was successful for us," said Reed. "Unfortunately, that's the way the game of basketball goes, sometimes you've got to make open shots as well."

Both Whitney-Sidney and Parolin finished with 12 points apiece on the night to lead the Mountain Hawks. Parolin added 10 rebounds, four of which were offensive, on route to his first double-double of the season.

In his second career start, first-year Cam Gillus stuffed the stat sheet, adding nine points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal in a career-high 33 minutes of action. Sophomore Bube Momah also recorded nine points while hauling in eight rebounds of his own.

First-year Joshua Ingram tallied eight points on 3-4 shooting in his fifth consecutive start while Burke Chebuhar, Ben Knostman, and Whitlock each added points for Lehigh in the loss.

The Mountain Hawks will be back in action on Saturday, January 27 to complete the season series against Holy Cross. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. and the game will again be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
