BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh women's cross country took part in the 49th annual Lehigh Paul Short Run presented by ASICS on Saturday morning. The Mountain Hawks placed 28th in the women's Gold 6k race and participated in the Open 6k run while Utah Valley claimed the top spot on the team leaderboards with 77 points.

Lehigh was led by Christina Yakaboski, who was also the Mountain Hawks' top finisher at last year's Paul Short Run. She finished 172nd in 2022 and improved upon that finish with a time of 21:41.1 and a 92nd place finish.

In second place for the Mountain Hawks was Lucy Afanasewicz, who also finished in second for Lehigh a year ago. Much like her teammate, Afanasewicz also improved greatly upon her mark last year, finishing 125th (21:57.6) after a 194th place finish in 2022.

Also finishing in the Gold 6k race for Lehigh was Maddison Hayes (22:00.1) at 133, Lindsay MacLellan (22:10.0) at 153, Savanah Beavers (22:35.0) at 210, Abigail Tenreiro (23:24.4) at 307, Elisa Brear (23:29.9) at 318, Grace Kolbe (23:33.2) at 325, Grace Hughes (24:12.7) at 358 and Andrine Larsen (24:43.3) at 372.

"We have four to five interchangeable girls that can be our number one on any given Saturday," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "I think we need to get confident in chasing out and running even further up. When one of us does that, that'll pull the whole team up."

Lehigh's top finisher in the women's Open 6k race was Athiel Mading, coming in 134th with a time of 24:23.9. Other top finishers in the Open 6k for the Mountain Hawks were Siri Hellenbrand (185th, 25:10.0) and Elizabeth Jenulis (198th, 25:25.1).

"Mother nature smiled on us today, but honestly this is an all hands on deck from all areas of the athletic department to put this event together," said Utesch. "It's such a showcase opportunity for our athletics department when you have schools flying in from all over the country and Canada… I think it's a phenomenal opportunity for the university to show what Lehigh Athletics is capable of."

The Mountain Hawks scored 682 points, good enough for 28th place at the race. Their score significantly improved from the year before, as Lehigh came in 38th with a score of 1015 in 2022.

Lehigh will be back in action on Friday, October 13 for the IC4A/ECAC Championship in New York City. The Mountain Hawks are scheduled to compete at 11:30 a.m. that morning.
