HAMILTON, N.Y. - A three-goal effort propelled the Lehigh field hockey team to a 3-1 win over Colgate on Saturday.
"It feels good to have another Patriot League win, but more importantly, I'm happy that I saw what we worked on at practice this week translate into our game today," said head coach Kelsi Lykens. "The past week, we focused on our attacking game and having a green light mentality. Today, we ripped shots when we had space, which generated second and third scoring opportunities for us. I'm very proud."
Seniors Julia Gatelein and Lotte Smorenburg along with sophomore Lela Boermeester scored goals in Lehigh's second league win.
The Raiders' Ella Murphy gave Colgate a 1-0 lead with 6:49 remaining in the first half. Lehigh held an 8-4 shot advantage at intermission.
Gatelein opened the scoring for the Mountain Hawks, evening the score 1-1 at 10:43 in the third quarter.
At 5:15 in the third, Smorenburg gave Lehigh a 2-1 lead off a deflection from a shot by junior Guusje Hogendoorn on a penalty corner.
With 7:26 remaining in the game, Boermeester gave the Mountain Hawks a two-goal lead off an assist from Gatelein.
Colgate had the opportunity to decrease Lehigh's lead to one with a penalty stroke opportunity in the final 17 seconds. Freshman goalkeeper Kate Burgess subbed in on the stroke opportunity, making the stop and earning her first-career save.
Lehigh dominated offensively, recording 17 total shots to Colgate's nine.
Junior goalkeeper Jenny Canoni made three saves in the victory with Burgess tallying one. Colgate's Claire van Kempen picked up five saves on the afternoon.
The Mountain Hawks (8-2) remain in New York tomorrow, heading to Cornell for a 2 p.m. matchup with the Big Red.
