Â
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team extended its win streak to four after overpowering Sacred Heart 5-2 at Ulrich Field on Sunday.
Â
"We started the game strong and finished strong, but there was a big lull in the middle," said head coach Kelsi Lykens. "Although I'm happy we turned it on in the 4th, there is still work that needs to be done to play a full 60 minute hockey game which we will tackle this week."
Â
Senior defender Lotte Smorenburg led the Mountain Hawks with two goals, climbing to four on the year.
Â
The first goal of the game came in the first minute, as senior Julia Gatelein dished the ball to sophomore Maddie Kandra who launched a shot at the top of the circle from her reverse and into the back of the cage.Â
Â
The next goal didn't come until the second quarter, when Sacred Heart got on the board. The Pioneers' Claire Skumurski let a shot of her own fly from the top of the circle to even the score at 1-1.
Â
Lehigh responded shortly after on a corner, as Smorenburg recorded her first goal of the afternoon off an assist from sophomore Zoe Day. The Mountain Hawks led 2-1 at intermission.
Â
Skumurski scored her second goal of the game and the lone goal in the third quarter to tie it up at 2-2.
Â
The Mountain Hawks scored three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter, starting with a score from senior Abbie Brown off an assist from freshman Ella Stephenson. Smorenburg capitalized on another penalty corner opportunity to tally her second of the game. Sophomore KK Sauve scored her first goal at Lehigh on a corner, off a pass from senior Erica Steele.
Â
Junior goalkeeper Jenny Canoni played all 60 minutes in goal, making no saves but recording the win. Sacred Heart goalkeeper Samantha Maresca recorded seven saves.
Â
Lehigh (4-1) hosts Saint Francis at 6 p.m. Friday followed by a Sunday matchup with Temple at Ulrich Field.Â
