Mountain Hawks Earn Fifth Win in a Row

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team extended its winning streak to five after defeating Saint Francis 2-1 on Friday night at Ulrich Field. The five-game winning streak comes on the heels of a six-game winning streak in 2022 which was the longest for Lehigh since 1986.

Seniors Abbie Brown and Julia Gatelein scored for Lehigh, with Gatelein netting her second penalty stroke of the season.

Lehigh struck first with 7:17 remaining in the first quarter. Brown scored on a corner off a deflection from a shot by sophomore KK Sauve.Â

The Mountain Hawks held a 1-0 lead through the rest of the first half. Lehigh held a 9-5 advantage in shots at intermission.Â

About halfway through the third quarter Saint Francis found the equalizer. Chloe Butz scored the goal for the Red Flash off an assist from Marie Sattler.

In the final five minutes of the game, Lehigh was awarded a penalty stroke opportunity following the ball hitting a Saint Francis defender's body behind the goalkeeper. Gatelein capitalized on the opportunity to lead Lehigh to a 2-1 win.

Junior goalkeeper Jenny Canoni played all 60 minutes in the cage, recording two saves. The Red Flash's Mia DiGenova played the first half and made eight saves before Amber Bryan came in for the second half, making one save.Â

Lehigh (5-1) returns to Ulrich Field on Sunday at 12 p.m. to host Temple. The game will be broadcast on Lehighsports.com/watch.Â
