
Lehigh Edged by Temple 2-1

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team's winning streak ended with a 2-1 loss to Temple on Sunday at Ulrich Field.

"We fought for a full 60 minutes today and are walking away with our heads held high," said head coach Kelsi Lykens. "We have some things to work on before our conference opener on Friday that we will address this coming week at practice."

Junior Guusje Hogendoorn scored her second goal of the season and the lone goal for the Mountain Hawks.

The first half was a scoreless battle between the teams, with Temple leading 3-2 in shots at intermission. Lehigh led in penalty corners with two, both of which occurring in the first quarter.

The Owls struck first just over five minutes into the second half, as Peyton Rieger dished the ball to Julia Bunch who gave Temple a 1-0 lead. Lehigh responded with a goal of its own two minutes later with Hogendoorn evening the score.

Myrthe Schuilenburg capitalized on a Temple penalty corner in the final minutes of the third quarter to take a 2-1 lead into the final quarter.

The Mountain Hawks earned a penalty corner in the final minute of the game, but Temple goalkeeper Molly Frey made a big stop for the Owls to secure the win for Temple.

Junior goalkeeper Jenny Canoni recorded five saves while Frey made one.

Lehigh (5-2) opens Patriot League play at 5 p.m. on Friday versus Boston University at Ulrich Field.
