BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team defeated Boston University 1-0 to open Patriot League play on Friday. The Mountain Hawks defeated the Terriers 2-1 in overtime in the 2022 Patriot League Championship.
Â
"I could tell why this was the 2022 conference championship rematch," said head coach Kelsi Lykens. "Tonight was an even matchup and high intensity for four quarters. I'm so proud of our team for sticking to and trusting our game plan because it made the difference tonight. I want to give a special shout out to Jenny Canoni for earning her first shutout as a Mountain Hawk. She was the commander of our defensive circle!"
Â
First-year Ella Stephenson scored her first career goal in the victory. Junior goalkeeper Jenny Canoni came up big for the Mountain Hawks, recording four saves with three occurring in the final seven minutes.Â
Â
Junior Guusje Hogendoorn and sophomore Zoe Day each fired three shots with all of Hogendoorn's landing on goal.
Â
The first quarter was scoreless between the teams, with the Terriers earning the lone penalty corner in the opening 15 minutes.
Â
Stephenson's goal came just over two minutes into the second quarter. The rookie carried the ball into the top of the circle and put a shot on cage. Boston's goalkeeper Kate Thomason got a touch on the shot, but it went into the goal to give Lehigh the 1-0 lead.
Â
Canoni picked up the first shutout of her career in the goal, and Thomason made eight saves.
Â
The Mountain Hawks dominated the third quarter, recording six penalty corners to the Terriers' three.Â
Â
Canoni's three saves in the final minutes thwarted Boston's momentum and final chances to score as Lehigh held on to secure the league-opening win.
Lehigh (6-2) heads to Wagner on Sunday afternoon for a 1 p.m. start.
