BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The first two games of the highly-anticipated regular season-ending series between Lehigh and Boston University went to the visiting Terriers Saturday at Leadership Park. Behind 5-1 and 9-2 victories, the Terriers dealt the Mountain Hawks their first Patriot League losses of the season and clinched the league's regular season title.
Boston University (48-7, 17-0 PL) will host the Patriot League Tournament May 11-13 and Lehigh is locked into the No. 2 seed. With two wins Saturday, Army West Point locked up the No. 3 seed while Bucknell and Colgate remain alive for the fourth and final spot in the tournament.
Lehigh (38-12, 15-2 PL) mustered four hits in each game with junior Brooke Cannon recording two in game one. Graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich had a hit in each game to extend her school record hitting streak to 33 straight games.
Four of the five runs scored by Boston University in game one came with two outs. Emily Gant's RBI single put the Terriers in front 1-0 after half an inning. Lehigh tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second when Cannon scored from third on a fielder's choice after BU starter Allison Boaz hesitated and threw late to the plate instead of throwing to first base to retire first-year Sydney Parlett for the third out of the inning.
Gant put the Terriers back in front in the fifth with a two-out, two-run home run to right. Audrey Sellers added an RBI single in the sixth and Kayla Roncin hit the first of her two home runs on the day in the seventh.
Junior Katelyn Young started in the circle and allowed five runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Boaz allowed a run on four hits with four strikeouts and no walks for the Terriers.
In game two, BU scored a pair of early runs when Lauren Keleher scored on an error with the bases loaded and Brooke Deppiesse hit a sacrifice fly to center.
Roncin snuck a two-run home run inside the left field foul pole in the second to double BU's advantage and the Terriers added two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth to go up 7-0.
Lehigh scored its only runs of the nightcap on a two-run home run to center by first-year Lily Owens, her team-leading seventh of the year.
Boston University tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh to claim the 9-2 victory. The Terriers had 13 hits with Roncin going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Caitlin Coker adding three hits and a run batted in.
In the circle, first-year Chloe Hess allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits over 3.2 innings and sophomore Maria Urban allowed three runs in 3.1 innings.
BU's Kasey Ricard struck out nine and walked one to earn the victory in the circle.
The Mountain Hawks and Terriers will wrap-up the regular season Sunday with a single game beginning at noon. Lehigh will honor its senior class prior to the game, which will be broadcast on ESPN+.
