BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team ended the regular season on a high note, scoring three runs in the sixth inning to rally past Boston University 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Leadership Park. Junior Brooke Cannon doubled home the tying runs and then scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Rory Dudley.
With Sunday's win, Lehigh closes the regular season at 39-12 overall and 16-2 in the Patriot League. The Mountain Hawks also halted BU's Patriot League record 28-game winning streak.
Lehigh and Boston University were scoreless through four innings with junior Katelyn Young allowing just one hit in that span, while stranding the bases loaded in the fourth. The Mountain Hawks had three singles through the first four frames against Lizzy Avery.
Boston University (48-8, 17-1 PL) broke through in the fifth on Caitlin Coker's two-out, two-run double to right to take a 2-0 lead.
Lehigh's sixth-inning rally began with a leadoff infield single by senior Josie Charles. First-year Lily Owens moved Charles to third with a single to right. Cannon then drilled a double to left center, scoring Charles and Owens to tie the game at 2-2; and moved to third on the throw home. Dudley then hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Cannon with the go-ahead run.
Young worked around a one-out single by Kayla Roncin in the seventh, retiring Coker on a fly ball to center field and getting Emily Gant to pop out to shortstop to end the game. Cannon opened the inning by running down a long drive by Lauren Keleher at the wall in right center to keep the leadoff batter off base.
Cannon led the way for Lehigh at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Lehigh finished with seven hits, including a leadoff infield single by graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich to begin the bottom of the first inning. Barjaktarovich has now hit safely in 34 consecutive games.
Young earned her 20th victory of the season, allowing two unearned runs on five hits in a complete-game effort. She walked four and struck out one.
