Seventh-Inning Rally Propels Lehigh To Friday Split With Seton Hall

4/7/2023 8:40:00 PM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Down 3-1 and facing the prospect of a doubleheader sweep at home, the Lehigh softball team rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Seton Hall 4-3 in the second game of a doubleheader Friday at Leadership Park.

After sophomore Rory Dudley tied the game with an RBI single, her third run batted in of the doubleheader, first-year Sydney Parlett's pop up to shallow right turned into a walk-off sacrifice fly as junior Brooke Cannon slid home safely ahead of the tag.
In Friday's first game it was Seton Hall tying the game in the seventh inning and then winning it 6-4 in 11 after scoring three runs in the 11th inning.

Friday's split leaves Lehigh at 28-8 overall, while Seton Hall is now 23-12.

The Mountain Hawks got a strong pitching performance from junior Ansley Dambach in game two. Dambach allowed two earned runs on five hits in a complete game effort for her first win of the season (1-0). She struck out two and walked two.

Seton Hall took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Abby Wingo scored on a wild pitch. Lehigh finally broke through in the fifth as senior Emily Cimino doubled to left to score graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich.
A Lehigh error prolonged the top of the sixth inning allowing Shelby Smith to put the Pirates back in front with an RBI single. Seton Hall added another run in the top of the seventh on Jenna Blevins' two-out, RBI double to right center.

Barjakarovich led off the seventh with a walk and moved to second when Cimino reached on an error. Cannon singled home Barjaktarovich to bring Lehigh within 3-2 with a Pirate error moving the tying and winning runs into scoring position.

Senior Josie Charles walked to load the bases, before Dudley delivered her game-tying single to right. Parlett followed with her sacrifice fly as Lehigh walked off with the victory.

Lehigh finished with nine hits in game two, with Parlett going 2-for-3 in addition to her sacrifice fly.

Sydney Babik took the loss for Seton Hall, allowing four runs (two earned) over 6.2 innings of work.

In game one it was Lehigh that repeatedly took leads only to see Seton Hall answer. Charles drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning and Wingo tied the game for Seton Hall with a sacrifice fly in the second.

Consecutive doubles from Charles and Dudley gave Lehigh a 2-1 lead after three innings with a Mountain Hawk error after a Wingo single allowing the Pirates to tie the game in the fourth.

Charles tripled with one out in the fifth and scored the go-ahead run on another Dudley RBI double.
Seton Hall opened the top of the seventh with four consecutive hits. Cannon threw out Taylor Soanes at the plate to keep Lehigh ahead momentarily, but Hannah Alexander's single tied the game at 3-3.

Lehigh could not win the game in the home seventh and the game went to extra innings. With neither team able to score in the eighth or ninth innings, the international tiebreaker was introduced in the 10th. Both teams were turned aside in the 10th. Seton Hall took the lead in the 11th as Ashly Colonnetta's dribbler in front of the plate went for an RBI infield single. Taylor Hill followed with a two-run double to put the Pirates up 6-3 going to the bottom of the 11th.

With Barjaktarovich placed on second base, first-year Lily Owens hit the first pitch up the middle for an RBI single to bring Lehigh within 6-4. Cimino then hit a drive into the gap in left center but Marisa Pla was able to run it down and throw back to first to double off Owens. Cannon flied out to right field to end the game.

Seton Hall out-hit Lehigh 13-11 in game one with four Pirates recording multi-hit games. Barjaktarovich, Owens, Charles, Dudley and sophomore Maddy Schmeiser all had two hits for the Mountain Hawks.

Junior Katelyn Young started in the circle for Lehigh and allowed two earned runs on 11 hits in seven-plus innings. She struck out two and did not walk a batter. First-year Chloe Hess allowed three unearned runs and took the loss for Lehigh.

Shelby Smith earned the win for Seton Hall with five innings of one-run relief in place of Kelsey Carr.

The Mountain Hawks and Pirates will wrap-up their series with a single game Saturday at noon from Leadership Park. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
