Lehigh's Winning Streak Snapped at 10 As Mountain Hawks Fall at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – Lehigh's 10-game winning streak came to an end Wednesday as Princeton defeated the Mountain Hawks 10-4 at Princeton Softball Stadium. The Tigers tagged Lehigh pitching for 12 hits and scored runs in each of the first four innings.
Sophomore Maddy Schmeiser went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Lehigh, but it was the out that she made that proved to be pivotal. With two runners on and two out in the fourth inning, Schmeiser was robbed by Princeton left fielder Serena Starks, who made a diving catch on a sinking line drive at the edge of foul territory to save two runs and keep the Tigers ahead 5-2.
Starks hurt Lehigh on the offensive end as well, going 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored.
The loss drops Lehigh to 27-7 on the season, while Princeton evens its record at 14-14.
The Mountain Hawks scored a run in the top of the first as first-year Lily Owens doubled with one out and then scored on a double to center by junior Brooke Cannon.
Princeton answered with two in the home first inning on an Adrienne Chang RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Julia Dumais. The Tigers added a run in the second and two in the third to go up 5-1 after three innings of play.
Lehigh pulled a run back in the fourth when pinch runner Crysta Duenas scored from third as junior Katelyn Young reached on a throwing error. Starks' diving catch on Schmeiser kept Lehigh down by three.
The Tigers extended their lead to 9-2 with a four run fourth inning. Starks had an RBI triple and Chang singled in two runs as part of the rally.
Lehigh added single runs in the fifth inning, as senior Josie Charles plated graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich with a sacrifice fly, and in the seventh when senior Emily Cimino scored on a wild pitch. The Mountain Hawks finished with seven hits, and while Princeton pitchers issued six walks, Lehigh left 10 runners on base.
First-year Chloe Hess started in the circle and took the loss (9-3), allowing five runs on five hits in 2.2 innings of work. Sophomore Maria Urban, Young and junior Ansley Dambach all saw time in the circle on Wednesday.
The Mountain Hawks are back home this weekend to host Seton Hall in a three-game non-league series. A doubleheader is set for Friday at 1:30 p.m. from Leadership Park and the series finale will be Saturday at noon. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
