Hess Throws 10.1 Scoreless As Lehigh Takes Two At Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – In its return to Patriot League play, the Lehigh softball team swept a doubleheader from Colgate Saturday at Eaton Street Softball Complex. The Mountain Hawks fell behind 5-0 early, then rallied to take a 7-5 lead, only to see the Raiders tie the game in the last of the seventh. A three-run 10th inning gave Lehigh a 10-7 victory in game one. The Mountain Hawks posted an early 5-0 lead in game two, which stood throughout to give Lehigh the sweep.
 
First-year Chloe Hess threw 10.1 innings of scoreless softball in the circle, earning both victories as Lehigh improves to 30-9 overall and 8-0 in the Patriot League. Colgate is now 15-21 overall and 5-3 in league play.
 
Junior Brooke Cannon totaled a team-high five hits in Saturday's doubleheader, while graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich and sophomore Lindsey Martin both tallied four. Senior Josie Charles and first-year Lily Owens both drove in four runs on the day.
 
In game one, Colgate scored four runs in the bottom of the first, thanks in part to an Adrienne Nardone two-run home run. The Raiders added a fifth run in the third inning on Steph Jacoby's RBI ground out to go up 5-0.
 
Lehigh capitalized on two of Colgate's four errors to score two runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Cannon that scored Charles, and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Rory Dudley.
 
The Mountain Hawks took a 6-5 lead with four runs in the fifth, capped by a two-RBI single by Owens.
 
Cannon singled  home senior Emily Cimino with an insurance run in the top of the seventh, but Colgate used a two-out rally to tie the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh on consecutive RBI singles by Jillian Herbst and Jacoby.
 
Hess came out of the bullpen and after walking the first batter she faced, got Elizabeth Nitka to ground out to send the game to extra innings.
 
Lehigh had two on with one out in the ninth but could not push the go-ahead run across. The Mountain Hawks finally broke through in the 10th as Charles doubled home Martin to give Lehigh an 8-7 lead. An RBI fielder's choice by Cimino and a squeeze bunt by Owens plated two more runs.
 
Hess set the Raiders down in order in the 10th to close out the game-one win. She retired all nine batters she faced in the extra innings, while walking one and striking out three in 3.1 innings of work.
 
Junior Katelyn Young started for Lehigh and allowed seven runs on six hits in 6.2 innings. She struck out five and walked seven.
 
Lehigh raced to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two behind RBI singles by Owens and Dudley; and added two more in the second on consecutive RBI doubles by Charles and Cimino. The Mountain Hawks added a fifth run in the third inning following a Raider error after a Charles single.
 
The Mountain Hawks had 13 hits in game two, with Cannon leading the way going 3-for-3.
 
Hess went the distance on a five-hitter for her first career shutout.  She struck out four and walked three to improve to 11-4 on the season.
 
Lehigh and Colgate will wrap up their series with a single game Sunday at noon. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
